Find your signature scent
Like introducing heels to your wardrobe, or dying your hair for the first time, graduating from body spray to perfume is just part of growing up.
But with the added investment comes an added responsibility. Perfumes are more expensive than body sprays, they last a lot longer, and chances are you’ll go back to a favourite fragrance time and time again (Narciso Rodriguez has been wearing the same musk since he was a teenager!), so it’s important you choose a scent that you really love.
Some of our fave scents are:
And here’s a few things to keep in mind when you’re at the perfume counter:
Your scent should be a reflection of your personality - you’ll be wearing it every day, and people will come to associate it with you.
All perfumes have three notes: The top note (evaporates first), middle note (develops later) and the base note (which is where you find the true scent of a perfume).
You should never buy a perfume the first time you smell it. Take a few samples home with you and give them time to develop (that way you will be able to smell all 3 notes). Wear each one for a full day, by itself, to really get a feel for it.
Don’t buy a perfume just because it’s new or by a designer you like. Once a perfume is on your body it has no labels, so choose a scent that YOU love.
Smelling too many perfumes in one go can cause a sensory overload! Fragrance stores and departments should have coffee beans handy - take a sniff to neutralise your sense of smell between scents.
There are five major fragrance categories: Floral, Oriental, Woody, Citrus and Fruity. Use the sales assistant’s knowledge to help you figure out which one you prefer, then concentrate on scents from just that category - it will make the decision process a whole lot easier!
Money saving tip: strawberrynet.co.nz sells most scents at discounted prices, so once you’ve done your research, go online to grab a bargain!
