Keeping a BIG secret
My best friend just told me that she is pregnant. She’s 18 and not with the father anymore so she wants to get an abortion. She hasn’t told anyone else and has asked me not to say anything. I think she needs to talk to someone else before making a decision like that though. Should I tell her Mum or someone that can help her, or should I do what she asked and keep it a secret?

An abortion is a serious and complicated decision, and is completely up to your friend alone what she decides to do. Your friend is undertaking a very tough decision and has confided in you so it is important that you maintain her trust.
You are right in that she does need to talk to someone before making a decision, which is reflected in the legal requirements for abortion. In order for a female to get an abortion she must have a meeting with two individual consultants who will help her to determine that she is making the right decision before she is allowed to undergo the procedure. The best way to get started with the process is to go to a Family Planning Clinic. Consultations are free for anyone under the age of 22 and they are able to set up the necessary appointments with the consultants.
The most important thing right now is to be there for your friend and provide support to her throughout this process. Try and leave your own feelings and opinions towards abortion out of it – in the end it is her personal decision and she is legally entitled to make decisions about her own body. However it is important that you help make sure she is receiving the right information to help her make this decision, so suggest that she makes an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible.
