The Easy Smokey Eye
It used to be that only the professionals could master the smokey eye, but with this easy tutorial anyone can create this dramatic look. This is makeup artistry - the easy peasy way!
Step 1: Using a dark black cream eyeliner pencil, cover the bottom of your eyelids completely. Don’t worry about rough, uneven edges just get the black eyeliner on those lids and get it on there thick and heavy! Make sure you go right to each corner of your eye.
Step 2: With the same dark black cream pencil, line the upper and lower lash lines of your eyes. Smudge the bottom line a little, bringing it down from your lash line just a bit - not so that you have huge shadows under your eyes, just a slight smudgy look.
Step 3: Use a small, stiff eyeshadow or concealer brush to smudge and blend the eyeliner that you rubbed over your eyelids in step one. Take the eyeliner right up to the crease in your eyelids, blending as you move up so that the colour is darker the closer it is to your lash line, and lighter the closer it gets to the crease - sort of like an ombre effect. Use the brush to smudge the eyeliner on your bottom lash line as well if necessary.
Step 4: For this step you may wish to use a gold shimmery eyeshadow, a silvery white eyeshadow or a bright colour such as orange or turquoise - it’s really up to you! I usually go for a shimmery gold or silver for a more traditional smokey eye look. Using the small, stiff eyeshadow or concealer brush gently dab a little of your selected colour over the black cream eyeliner you have applied and smudged onto your eyelids. Be sure to dab - not wipe. This will ensure that none of the black colour comes off, instead your eyeshadow colour will just ‘sit’ on top of it.
Step 5: Once you’ve applied your eyeshadow, get a fluffy soft eyeshadow blush and blend the colour in a little more. This will secure it in place and allows you to take the colour as far up - or out - on your eyelid as you wish. Using this brush, blend underneath your bottom lash line as well so that the colour shows just slightly there as well. Be warned: take the colour too far below your lash line and you may end up looking like you have a black eye, particularly if you are using a purple or brown colour over black eyeliner.
Step 6: This part is now up to you. Blend and add more colour, or black eyeliner, as you wish. How dark or bright you wish to go is your choice.
Step 7: Apply a generous coating of mascara to your lashes - or falsies if you feel really daring. Now, go and rock that smokey eye!
Handy Hints:
Once complete, wipe under your eyes and cheekbones with a bronzer brush to whip away any excess colour leftover from your eyeshadow.
It pays to apply the smokey eye before the rest of your makeup - including your foundation and bronzer. However, if you choose to do your eye makeup first apply your normal base makeup to the eye area first to ensure your eyeshadow stays in place.
Practise makes perfect. If you have a big event coming up and wish to do smokey eyes, it might pay to have a ‘practise run’ first to ensure it looks flawless on the night.
Fix eye makeup mistakes with a cotton bud dipped in cleansing cream. Using another cotton bud dipped in concealer is an easy way to reapply the small patch of makeup you just removed.
