Skincare do’s and don’ts

Skin The thing about skin is that there’s always going to be someone telling you what they think is best. Your Aunty Phyllis might be an advocate of a flannel and water, your Mum might be into high end products and your bestie might be loving a routine that just doesn’t work for you.

Throw into the mix all the different product options available on the shelves, and the mountains of advice you can find online and in mags, and pretty soon you’re in a skin care black hole!

But, regardless of what everyone disagrees on, there are a few tried and true dos and don’ts that everyone should agree on. They’re the things to live by, day in, day out. Here’s our Top 5…

1. Don’t: Squeeze your spots! It pushes the oil and bacteria further into the skin and will make them stick around for even longer.

Do: Use a spot clearing cream containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

2. Don’t: Use soap on your face. The ingredients in ordinary body soaps are way too harsh for the sensitive skin on your face.

Do: Use products that address your skin concerns. There’s products made for pretty much every problem.

3. Don’t: Go out in the sun without sunscreen. 80% of skin damage caused by the sun happens before you turn 18, so it’s super important you ALWAYS wear sunscreen when you’re outside, especially when you’re young!

Do: Use a moisturiser or foundation with an SPF. Having sunscreen in a product that you use everyday will mean one less thing to remember in the mornings. And making it a habit when you’re young will mean great skin for years to come!

4. Don’t: Use a harsh exfoliator everyday. Exfoliating every day can aggravate your skin and leave it sensitive and blotchy. Sometimes it can upset it so much it breaks out, so be careful!

Do: Exfoliate 2 – 3 times a week with a gentle scrub. Exfoliating is an important part of your skin care regime, just don’t over do it.

5. Don’t: Go to bed with your make up on. Leaving a days worth of dirt, oil and makeup on your face overnight is a recipe for pimples.

Do: Clean off all your makeup with a cleanser, then tone and moisturise before hitting the hay.
