How to tell when your tampon needs changing
Myth: If a tampon is still quite dry when it comes out you don’t need to use another one straight away.
Made up! This is more likely to be a case of either: a. changing your tampon too often or; b. you may not be using quite the right absorbency of tampon for your flow.
It can be tricky to get both these things right, so here are the basic rules:
1. Use the lowest absorbency necessary for your flow at a particular time during your period.
2. You will be able to tell if your tampon needs changing by gently pulling on the string. If it doesn’t move, it’s not saturated enough so doesn’t need changing.
3. If you remove the tampon after 4-5 hours and still see dry white fibre on the tampon, it is too absorbent…use a less absorbent tampon the next time. (Or, if you’re already using the lowest absorbency, it’s OK to leave it in for anything up to eight hours.
4. If your tampon is saturated in less than four hours, move up to a more absorbent tampon next time. (eg: mini to regular, regular to super)
Once you know how to tell when your tampon needs changing and which absorbency to use, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable (and won’t be spending more than you need to on tampons either!)
Truth: Your period doesn’t just stop.
That’s correct. Your period can last anywhere from 3 – 7 days and towards the end the flow becomes lighter and lighter before it finally stops. That’s why it’s important to adjust the level of tampon you use to match the flow. Typically, most people use a more absorbent tampon at the beginning of their period (when the flow is heavier) and then switch to a less absorbent period as their flow gets lighter towards the end.
YOUR FLOW - AND PRODUCT TO USE
Light: Mini tampon or light pad - lowest absorbency
Medium: Regular tampon or pad - medium absorbency
Heavy: Super tampon or pad - highest absorbency
Best of the rest
