Why it’s important to take time out

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, and they’re designed to restore and heal when we need it. Unfortunately many of us tend to feel guilty about taking time out and ignore our bodies’ cues, even though we might be exhausted.

In reality, taking time out to relax is really important. It reinvigorates us and gives us energy - making us more efficient and effective, not to mention happier! Dr Frank Lipman is an New York based doctor who believes many illnesses in the Western world occur as a result of humans pushing themselves beyond the point of exhaustion in an attempt to keep up with an increasingly busy world. He calls it, simply, being ‘Spent’.

As Dr Lipman explains it, “With the rise in technology in the last 40 or 50 years, we have begun to live more and more out of sync with [nature’s] fundamental rhythms and continually give our bodies the wrong cues. For instance, we spend too much time indoors and have too much artificial light at night; we are typically either [inactive] or over-exercising; and we rarely experience nature’s rhythms.”

“When someone is Spent, the body is doing everything it can to indicate that it is time to slow down, rest, detoxify, repair, replenish, and restore.”

Summer is a great opportunity to relax and give our bodies a chance to restore. Click here for some of Dr Lipman’s tips for how to do so and avoid feeling Spent.

Great tips! I have been trying lately to have an ‘electronic sundown’ and stop using my computer etc. an hour before i go to bed and I actually think it really helps me fall asleep faster.

Also I totally agree with ILR that exercise can actually be really relaxing. Most exercise is quite rhythmic which I find allows you concentrate more on what doing and less on stressful thoughts about work/school. I have found that personally, one of the most relaxing times for me to go for a run, walk or bike ride is around sunset. I think this is because it has usually cooled down a bit so I don’t overheat or dehydrate and also the gentle light is very relaxing. Try it!

Also one thing I have tried to get into the habit of doing is setting aside 1 hour before I go to bed a couple of times a week just to have a nice long relaxing bath, maybe listening to some calm music and reading really helps me collect my thoughts and just allow my body some rest. I find that at the end of a busy week, this is exactly what I need just to wind down before the weekend.

Wow, fantastic article! Good things to keep in mind smile.
I run a really busy schedule with schoolwork and a lot of extracurricular activities so finding time to relax is important. It’s nice when you have a school night with nothing on and you can relax for a few hours.

I find that a hot lemon and honey drink is relaxing, as well as a hot shower in winter before bed, eating well, drinking enough and, of course, getting to bed at a reasonable time! That keeps my energy levels up.

I like to take time out to listen to music, watch a bit of TV.

It seems funyn but exercise also helps me to relax in a way - because it’s a diversion from school and other work and it really gets your juices flowing. A good workout refreshes you mentally and is physicaly rewarding. smile

About three months ago I started doing bar work on friday and saturday nights and found myself really tired, as my body kept trying to wake up too early the next day. Now I have mannaged to relax when I wake up too early on saturday and sunday mornings and take it slowly, I feel better and don’t get run down as easily due to stress!

Keeping a constant daily schedule is important for me: It allows me to give time to everything I need to do in a day without noticing signs of fatigue if I maintain my schedule wake up time, bedtime, and 3 main mealtimes, also 60mins a day of exercise:)
