So you wanna be a sub-editor?

Sarah IllingworthSarah Illingworth
Sub Editor, Rip It Up

Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I sub edit Rip It Up, a music magazine in New Zealand.

Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. I basically spell-check all the written content of the magazine before it goes to print! On deadline a typical day involves getting up, getting into work mode (usually happens with the help of a strong coffee), and chipping away at the issue, one article at a time. I also write articles for Rip It Up, as well as some other magazines. This usually involves talking to artists, transcribing those interviews and doing the write up.

Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. I live in New York and work on a magazine in New Zealand! I can work anywhere with internet, a good spot to sit and a lot of light (I like light).

Q. Any downsides?
A. I love working from home, but I miss working around other people sometimes. Also, on deadline I basically work any minute I have - I’ve been sub editing while plugged into a PowerPoint in an airport bathroom, next to a baby having its nappy changed. All in the line of duty…

Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I did a Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT - majored in radio and ended up writing content for websites at Satellite Media after a stint at 95bFM. I also wrote for other magazines, and did some copy editing. I started sub editing for the hip hop magazine Back2Basics a couple of years ago.. at the start of 2009 Rip It Up took over Back2Basics and I got to keep my job. Excellent!

Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. It’s definitely important to have a good grasp of spelling and grammar to sub edit anything! I think anyone who’s studied at university level (and is into spelling and grammar!), could get into it - although, as with anything, you get better the more you do it. I was lucky to be able to learn a lot of what I know on the job. There are short courses out there that teach writing and editing skills too, it’s never too late!

Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Honesty, integrity and a sense of humour.

Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A.
Eat a good breakfast. Work hard - with a little persistence and room to improve you’ll get where you want to be. Instinct is more reliable than you might think! Don’t be afraid to trust yours. It won’t always tell you to do things the way other people do them, but that’s because you aren’t other people - you’re YOU!
