So you wanna be…a tattoo artist?
Jane Laver
Tattoo artist
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. Tattooer and shop owner at Chapel Tattoo [in Melbourne].
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Tattooing, drawing, consulting and advising. I do between two and three tattoos a day.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The people I work with, and that, for the most part, I get to do tattoos that are a lot of fun to do. This job constantly challenges me.
Q. Any downsides?
A. The pain people endure. I understand tattoos can hurt, but if people don’t deal with it in a reasonable manner, it makes the whole experience far more draining and protracted. I have little time for movers and wailers.
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. Perseverance, luck and timing. I travelled to the US in 1995, and ended up with a job at Eastside Ink in NYC. It was an amazing experience and a turning point in my life.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. I did study, but not for tattooing - it’s an on the job training kind of profession.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Honesty, humility, originality and diligence.
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Work hard to get where you want, assume nothing, speak less and listen more. I’m still trying to master the last one.

I have two tattoos and got my first one on my 16th birthday, tattooing is a very specialized skill, they are detailed and have to be careful, I appreciate tattoo artist as most of them have attention to detail and cater as hard as they can to comply with the clients needs and have extreme patience. A steady hand is needed and trying hard not to make a mistake as it is permanent would be really hard! Posted by POWERBALLIN25 "on" 08/13 "at"12:35 AM |
