Why I love my job: Kathy Hart
Name: Kathy Hart
Age: 21
What’s your job title and where do you work?
I am a newly Registered Nurse working in an acute orthopedics ward at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.
Give us a run down of what a typical day at work involves for you…
The great thing about nursing is that every day is completely different. Typically, I look after patients with a broken bone or multiple fractures, depending on the injury. My days can be very challenging as some patients have very limited mobility and are experiencing a lot of pain, but I am usually working with six other nurses so it’s a great team environment.
What made you choose to become a nurse?
When I was growing up my parents always said I would be a good nurse! I was always intrigued by gruesome things – cuts, broken bones etc. As I got older I learnt that I was more of a hands-on, practical learner and I could’t imagine myself sitting at a desk all day, so nursing seemed like a good career for me.
What do you like most about your job?
I love being able to help people that are in need. Being in orthopedics you get to see the progression of patients. When they come into hospital they may not be able to move, but they slowly get better. We work alongside a team of physiotherapists, social workers and occupational therapists to help people through their journey and get them back to their usual mobility. Nursing offers a lot of job satisfaction and you are always interacting and working with different people.
Are there any downsides?
Being accountable for your patients can be quite scary as a new graduate, but it’s also really rewarding.
What nursing fields can a new graduate work in?
There are so many opportunities for nurses. You could get into community nursing and become a district nurse, a palliative care/Hospice nurse, school nurse, public health nurse, Plunket nurse and more! If you are wanting to get into public hospital and acute care nursing you can work in different areas such as medical, surgical, paediatric and emergency care.
Nurses have also recently had the opportunity to further specialise in their field and become Nurse Practitioners, which allows them to prescribe medications for their patients in their specialised area.
Why did you choose to become an acute care nurse?
I find acute nursing in the hospital very exciting and challenging. Our patients are often unpredictable and unwell, and their plan of care can change very quickly! Because I am newly graduated I think it is a great environment for me to learn in too.
What qualifications do you need to become a nurse?
You need to obtain a Bachelor of Nursing. It is a a three year degree.
Can you tell us a bit about where you studied and why you chose to study there?
I studied at Manukau Institute of Technology in Auckland. I’m really glad that I studied nursing there because the lecturers are incredibly supportive of their students. They are also very knowledgeable and passionate about nursing and pass this on to their students. The degree is also set up really well. It is very hands-on and you are able to experience a variety of clinical placements.
Have you got any advice/tips for girls thinking about nursing as a career?
Go for it! Don’t let anyone tell you that it is too difficult. Although there is a lot you have to learn, if you study in a good supportive environment you will be able to do it!
