Working a second job

Money Smarts

BusyThings are never easy. We nearly always want more than what we’ve got. A better computer, a new pair of shoes, the latest iPhone, tickets for Rhythm & Vines and the BDO. But when money goes out as quickly as it comes in how can we possibly free up more cash for the extras?

If you’re like me you’ve tried asking your boss for an increase in either your pay or the amount of hours you’re working - and been denied! - so the only options left are to cut down on your expenses, go without, or start looking for a second job!

A second job can be an amazing experience – you’ll have some extra money in your pocket and you can test out different career paths and take up more opportunities while you’re young. Having variation in your work life makes things more interesting too. But when you’re already juggling one job, study and a social life you have to consider whether having a second job is realistic.

For starters, you’ll be taxed at a higher rate for your second job, click here to figure out exactly how much. The other big concern is the increased stress levels and time restrictions a second job can bring. How much free time do you currently have? If your days are already full, working extra hours is going to cut into other parts of your life, like study or hanging out with friends and family. Is the extra cash worth it? You also have to think about your primary employer and consider any implications there. If you think the second job could be a rival business it’d be a good idea to clear things with your current boss first!

If you create a list of all the pros and cons the decision should be a lot easier to make. And if a second job turns out to be too much, this great article on budgeting might be able to help you get some of things you want!

I agree with Impy. I work one part time job whilst still at school and it is pretty hard to work around the sports I play plus getting homework done on time. Homework is definitely always first priority though

I have worked 3 jobs once and it was actually not that bad - as well as university. I work better under pressure anyway.
