How to dress for a first date
I’m going on a date with a guy I really really like, but he’s into fashion so now I’m having a meltdown because I don’t know what I should wear! Can you give me some advice? PLEASE!!!!!
First up, if a boy cares more about how you look and what you wear than the person you are, he doesn’t deserve you! Having said that though, everyone likes to look good, and personality aside, what you wear on your first date is important. Going too dressed up will scream out high maintenance to your gentleman suitor, but dressing down will give the impression that you don’t care. So where is the middle ground? What’s the perfect first date outfit? That’s what we’re here for. Welcome to the do’s and don’ts of first date dressing.
DON’T break out your leather mini dress and 5 inch platform heels! A first date should be a subtle affair.
DO show off your best features without being too obvious. A great rule to remember is show off only one body part at a time. So, if you love your legs, wear a cute skirt but cover-up on top with a cami cardigan combo.
DO dress to the occasion. If you don’t know where you are going beforehand, this can be tricky. A safe option is to wear something classic yet comfy. Skinny jeans, cute flats and an embellished top would fit in at Laser Strike or a fancy restaurant. Check out Isla Fisher’s outfit for inspiration - she’s nailed the look.
DON’T try too hard. He chose to go out on a date with YOU, so if you turn up in an outfit bearing no resemblance to your usual self, he won’t be impressed.
DO let your personality shine through in your outfit. If you have a penchant for tea cosy hats or geek glasses, best he knows now than a few dates down the road, and if he doesn’t like it, he wasn’t meant to be.
DO make sure you feel comfortable. Comfort and confidence go hand in hand, and confidence is an accessory that makes every outfit work.
Still confused? Check out our first date finds and where to get them below…
