Fashion Week Review: Stolen Girlfriends Club

Stolen Girlfriends Club at NZFW 2010 – Review

Last night, as the wait in the queue outside the Mercury Theatre for Stolen Girlfriends much anticipated show approached the one hour mark, the fashion-focused, yet cold and grizzly crowd needed a stellar performance from the SGC lads to forget how draining the Fashion Week night shift can be. And, by most accounts, they got it.

From the start, it was a cheeky, high-energy show. The audience decorum usually synonymous with Fashion Week was replaced by enthusiastic whopping and hollering. The models too seemed more relaxed than usual, as they strolled down the theatre stage with a causal, mischievous, finesse. The show concluded in crowd-pleasing style with a mock wedding between two models, sealed by the happy couple throwing an exploding bouquet into the audience. Naturally.

It was a tightly integrated collection with key elements weaved throughout both the men’s and women’s wear and defining the collections overall look. Essentially, come next season, should you see anyone apparelled in wine –red leather or purple hydrangea print, you’ll know they’re wearing Stolen Girlfriends.

I particularly enjoyed the sprinkle of 70’s flavour throughout; high necklines, organza ruffle trims, bell-bottomed pants, flared sleeves and two-toned chambray/camel combos.

Paying homage to the item that gave them their start, SGC enthusiasts will no doubt relish the opportunity to add the “I belong to the Stolen generation” statement tee to their collection.
