Working colour and patterns into your wardrobe
I want to start wearing more colour and patterns, but I don’t really know how because I never have before and I’m scared I’ll look stupid. Any suggestions?
It’s not surprising that colour and patterns scare you. Us Kiwis wear black like it’s our uniform! But adding a splash of colour or a hint of print brightens up any outfit, and it’s easy if you know what you’re doing. Just follow these golden rules.
1: Some bright colours and bold patterns can make your skin look a little washed out. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear them though, just don’t wear them near your face. Try wearing a brilliant skirt or head turning heels instead, and team with black - just like Lily.
2: Matching colour from head to toe is a big no-no! Two colour co-ordinated items per outfit is enough. Pink heels and a pink based print top for example is a perfect combo.
3: Keep it tonal. You can wear more than one colour per outfit (yes - even red and pink!) as long as the colours are the same tone. If the word tone is confusing, think of it as matching light with light or dark with dark. For example, a dark purple top would work with a dark red head scarf, or you could team light pink canvas trainers with light blue denim shorts.
4: Don’t mix prints. It’s very rare that print-on-print works, so unless you’re a total print pro, it’s best not to go there. If you simply can’t help yourself though, remember that under no circumstance should animal prints ever be mixed - unless you’re auditioning for a part on Outrageous Fortune.
5. Remember confidence goes with any outfit. No matter how bright, busy or put-together your attire, without self confidence you risk blending into the background. So stand up straight, smile and let everyone know that you’re amazing!
