Serious style on a budget

q:I’m always on a tight budget but I absolutely love shopping! I really want to get a nice, bright summer dress but all the ones I like are too expensive. Can you please tell me where to look to find a reasonably priced, awesome dress? And do you have any tips on making my budget stretch further?

a:

You’ve checked under the couch cushions and raided the piggy bank but you still can’t afford that designer dress? Well, neither can we. But that’s ok, because we know how to make the dollars you do have stretch a little further, just follow these do’s and don’ts.

Sienna MillerDo: Go to Kmart and The Warehouse. These stores are full to bursting with pretty summer dresses! They have great fashion buyers following the international trends and translating them into wearable and affordable fashion available nationwide. How can you go wrong?

Don’t: Be afraid to check out the outlet stores. Chain stores have such a quick turnaround of product that you might find a pretty dress in an outlet store that is still being sold for full retail elsewhere. There are real bargains to be had at outlet malls, it just takes a bit of perseverance. We recommend befriending the shop assistants, it’s always handy to know when the next product drop will be.

Do: Shop the sales. Save up every spare penny, take your Christmas money from Nana and hit the January sales hard. Have a list of the things that you want to buy before you go so you don’t get sidetracked. Be warned, big sales can get pretty chaotic so best to go early when everyone is still sleeping, or on a nice day when everyone else is at the beach.

Don’t: Buy things that aren’t your size, colour or flattering to your shape just because it’s cheap or on sale. You will never wear it. Save your money for something that you really love.

Do: Sleep on it. If you are unsure about buying something with your hard earned cash, put it on hold and have a think about it. If you can still remember the blouse/shoes/dress the next day then it is a good indication that you really love it and will wear it forever.

Don’t: Be afraid to mix and match new pieces with vintage finds. Some of the world’s best dressed swear by this little tip – Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are practically famous for it!

Do: Remember good style is not about what store you bought an item from, it’s about how you wear it. With a little imagination you will have no trouble looking stylish on a super tight budget. Be confident with your style choices, no matter what!

Check out these bargain buys for inspiration…

1. Peacock dress from The Warehouse $19.99
2. Purple Maxi from Glassons $49.99

I love the vintage look but I find that this style is more often found in valleygirl, glassons etc rather than farmers and op shops. however I recently bought a dress from a gypsi fair despite skepticism of the quality for only $35 and love it.

I love chains stores. I don’t think it matters if many other girls have the same top as you. Each person wears it completely differently!!

What I try to do is alter the clothes I have so they are more fashionable,(and im not great at it but most of them turn out looking ok). I also keep all of my clothes because you never know if something may come back into fashion or be good for a costume.

Op shops are great cause I have found floral dresses that are to big for me and just used the fabric to make a tunic dress, its in fashion and it looks good too.

I like to visit Savemart, pays to shop as more than one if possible as the quality and style of clothes differ in areas. They are especially good if looking for themed clothes for parties

Op shops are a really awesome place to find all sorts of gems! You can get so many clothes for the almost nothing. I’m on a limited budget, so op shops are my best friend. There’s always something amazing that you’ll find if you look hard enough :D

Another good idea is to hit the op shops because they actually do have some pretty cool clothes. The trick is finding them and then possibly editing them to fit your own style eg. cutting a long skirt in a cool pattern into a short skirt.
