Get a great job in travel
Name: Renee
Age: 20
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m a telesales agent at Qantas Airways in Auckland city
Q. Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Every day is different but typically I help customers with bookings - including groups or couples or unaccompanied minors. I help them plan and book their travel to different destinations around the world.
Q. What made you choose this career?
A. I have always wanted to get into the airline industry and to become cabin crew for different airlines some day. But to do so you have to start somewhere and gain experience, working your way up.
Q. What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
A. Every day I deal with people from all parts of the world so there’s heaps of different accents. Also, I’m always conscious of aiming for our weekly sales stats. Every customer is different so there’s plenty of variety.
Q. Any downsides?
A. Shift work is not really my type of thing as it clashes with my social life! Working in the travel industry is pretty much all shift work so it’s just a matter of dealing with it!
Q. Tell us a bit about where you studied and why?
A. I studied Tourism A&B at Rosehill college for 2 years before I started at Crown Institute where I studied their Crown Certificate in International Travel, Tourism & Airline Studies. I really enjoyed it, and I was actually a little sad to leave Crown. It was an awesome experience and made me really like the idea of working in the tourism industry.
Thanks to Natalie, the Industry Liaison at Crown, I landed an awesome job with AOT-Australian outback Travel straight away, then moved on here to Qantas.
Q. What qualifications have you got and what else could you do with these qualifications if you weren’t a flight attendant?
A. I have got NCEA level 1 & 2, I have level 2,3, and 4 in hospitality, food & beverage and I have level 2,3,4 in Travel & Tourism. I also have a certificate in a Barista course, a First Aid certificate with Red Cross and also extra curricular certificates with Blue Lagoon Cruises and Air Tahiti .
I would like to work in a travel agency one day for a longer period of time, and maybe also work onboard a cruise ship.
Q. Any advice for girls who are hoping to work in a similar role (as to how they can get into it)?
A. You need to really present yourself well, be confident and you need to think positive and work hard to do the things you want to do. Studying Qantas before being interviewed also helped me as they sometimes ask what you really know about them etc.
But all I can say is Good luck to anyone who wants to work in the industry, it really is a great industry and the “PERKS” are great!
