Getting your learners

DrivingOhhh yeah! It’s finally time to take that first step toward freedom: sitting your learner’s. But where do you go? How does it work? What will it cost?? Let us help.

Need to know:

* The kind of vehicle you drive affects the kind of licence you need

* There are three stages: learner (stage 1), restricted (2) and full (3)

* You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner licence

* You need a learner licence before you start learning (it basically gives you permission to start)

* If you drive without a licence (at any point) you risk a) being fined a minimum of $400; b) being forbidden to drive by police; c) having your vehicle impounded. It can also affect your insurance options.

What does it cost?

To sit your learner licence expect to pay: application fee of $47.20 + test fee of $44.70 = $91.90 total.

Where do I get it?

You can apply to sit your learner licence through

* The AA

* Vehicle Testing NZ

* Vehicle Inspection NZ (in Auckland, Lower Hutt, Christchurch and Dunedin)

What’s involved?

To get your learner licence you need to pass a road rules theory test. Click here to find out what kind of questions you’ll be asked. You can actually buy practice tests too!

Careful!

If you cancel or change your test time you won’t necessarily get your money back. If you don’t give two full working days notice you’ll have to pay another test fee, and even if you do give two days notice you’ll need to pay $16 to reschedule. You can apply for a refund of the original test fee but there’s still a processing fee involved. Moral of the story? Don’t skip the test! Find out more here.

Once you have your learner’s you’re good to go! Well, good to work on getting your restricted at least. For more on what you can and can’t do when driving on a learner licence, and what happens next, check out the NZTA website and Practice.co.nz.

Comon Discuss It..
Make sure you do the practice tests. They have all the possible questions you could be asked. Make sure you can get everything right practicing before you sit your test. When it comes to restricted license time, they assume you know them all and mark you according to this. Breathe between each question and don’t panic too much if you get one wrong. I found that the quizes on AA’s website were excellent at drilling you. One more thing: make sure you have the current roadcode! I failed the first time because some of the questions weren’t in the 2006 roadcode.

Hope you pass! Love Blappy xo
