Hair Straighteners

hair straightenersDiscover 5 things you must know before buying hair straighteners…

One of the simplest facts of life is that most of us want the hair we haven’t got. Fine loves thick..…dark wants blonde…..you know how it is! No matter how gorgeous our own hair happens to be, we all want a change. (Hey, we’re girls!) Right now though, it seems that what every girl wants is a pair of hair straighteners.

Lets take a look at your options…

GHD Hair Straighteners. GHD hair straighteners (GHD stands for “Good Hair Day”) are the ultimate choice - they can work miracles on even the frizziest, most out-of-control hair - but at nearly $300.00 a pop, they’re not affordable for everyone, so a lot of us need to go for something a bit cheaper.

Not all straighteners are created equal, however, so read on for some tips on choosing the right one for you, no matter what your budget.

247 Girl Happy Hair tip: Give yourself the occasional “I don’t give a toss about what my hair looks like” day and just chillax! It will make you feel great and give your hair a well deserved break from your straighteners too!

Key things to consider when buying a straightener:

Price. The most important factor for a lot of people. Basically, the more you spend, the better the product you will get. A hair straightener (assuming its well looked after) should last you a long time - so it’s probably a one-off investment and worth spending a decent amount on. However, there are some really good, not-so-expensive ones around – (check out the $40 - $50 ones available from Remington and Vidal Sassoon!)

Weight. Generally, the lighter the better. If you’ve got thick or very long hair, you don’t want to get sore hands or arms, so choose the lightest and most comfortable-to-hold product possible.

Best Fit. Did you know that you can adjust your straightener to fit your hair length? (I didn’t!) Unless your hair is ultra long, look for a straightener with a plate width of 1.5 inches - otherwise try and get something a bit wider.

Plate Types. Ceramic plates are best (these won’t damage your hair if they overheat) Ceramic plates are also supposed to produce better results overall – this hasn’t been scientifically proven but many people swear by them!

Heating Time. This is a big factor for girls on the run! The GHD straightener heats to 210 degrees in 7 seconds – you can’t get much better than that! - but Farmers also has a $49.95 Vidal Sassoon straightener that is advertised as having “fast heat-up for the most resistant hair” – so you don’t necessarily need to pay the earth!

Also consider the results of a recent survey* which found that the best straighteners did the following:

- Straightened hair effectively (usually inunder 20 minutes)
- Gave results that lasted (so approx 9 - 12 hours of lovely straight hair
- Moved smoothly through the hair without getting tangled or stuck.
- Were easy to handle
- Had a fast heat-up time
- Were usually “tong style” rather than “scissor style” (purely for ease of handling, scissor style ones still performed well).

The bottom line is that you’ll more than likely need to shop, but if you consider the tips above when you hit the shops, you shouldn’t go far wrong! As always, make sure that whatever you choose has a warranty, and try and buy it from a reputable retailer. It’s worth checking out Trade Me (you might just pick up a bargain!) but just take extra care with ensuring the seller’s credibility and reliablility so that you don’t end up losing out on the deal.
