How to colour your hair at home

24/7 Girl Vintage article

qShould I dye my hair at home, or should I get it done professionally? Lots of my friends dye their hair at home, but I’m scared that if I try I’ll do it wrong and it will be a disaster. I’ve never dyed my hair before.

aDying your hair at home only goes bad when you don’t follow the instructions! If you read them properly, and follow them exactly, you can get professional looking results for a fraction of what you’d pay at the salon. And if you’re still not convinced, these tricks of the trade will guarantee a great result.

1. Always test the colour in two small sections, so you can see what the it will look like at the root and tip of your hair. Take one section from the nape of your neck, and the other from a hidden part of your crown.

2. If your hair is long, buy two boxes of dye. You want to be sure you have enough product to cover all your hair.

3. Choose a colour from a range with lots of options so you can find the best shade for your hair. Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Hair Colour, $15.49, Clairol Nice‘n Easy, $12.99 and L’Oréal Paris Excell 10, $17.99 all have a good selection.

4. Never use a comb to distribute colour. Dye makes your hair vulnerable to damage, and using a comb can cause it to break. Instead, work colour through with your fingers (but make sure you’re wearing gloves!).

5. Highlights and major colour changes require skill, so leave that to the professionals. For best at home hair results go with a shade that’s no more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your natural colour.

6. Don’t forget your brows! If you’re going darker light brows can make your new hue look fake. Either pop a bit of dye on them (leave it for no longer than 5mins), or darken with a brow pencil.
