Eat Green
Whether you’re a meat eater or vegetarian/vegan there are easy food choices you can make that are both good for you, and good for the environment.
A lot of commercially produced foods are treated with a bunch of crazy pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, genetically modified ingredients and other chemical additives that CAN’T be good for us. Also, a lot of industrial meat and poultry farms are thought to create more greenhouse gasses than all types of transport combined - and the amount of food and grain fed to livestock in the US alone each year could feed everyone in the world five times!
There are many great reasons to ‘green’ your diet, below are some easy ways to get started:
*Reduce your meat intake, and try to support grass fed, free range or organic local farms when you do eat meat. Eat vegetarian when you can!
*Avoid processed foods as much as possible - and educate yourself about how the food you do consume is produced.
*Take your own reusable bag to the supermarket, and try to buy foods with biodegradable/minimal packaging to cut down on waste.
*Buy locally. Not only is it good for the local economy, it also reduces your carbon footprint because the food hasn’t been transported a million miles to get to you!
If you can’t afford to eat organic all the time, choose a few foods - like meat - that have a particularly big carbon cost and go organic with these. Hopefully it won’t be too long before it’s more affordable to eat organic than not!
Remember: not only are you helping the environment by eating green, it’s also great for your health!

When I was little my Nana had a knotted bag that scrunched up really small much like the fabric space-saving ones today and it was always in her bag. Ever at the ready. After seeing some pics of animals trapped in plastic bags and those ring thingees off six-packs I swore when I grew up I’d be one of those ladies with a wee bag trolley thing to roll to and fro from the market. I haven’t found one yet unfortunately so I use fabric bags. One day, one day… Posted by Bobannie "on" 10/07 "at"01:26 PM |
| Start a vege garden. Veges will taste twice as good (: Posted by Thaaat_Chickee_Xx "on" 05/24 "at"08:24 PM |
| Thanks for those tips! They’re really useful. It’s more important than ever to address environmental issues and look after our planet for future generations. As global citizens we have that responsibility I’m not a vegetarian but I’m a big fan of ‘eating green’. I try and avoid processed foods as the prodution of them pollutes the environment - and the food itself doesn’t exactly benefit your body. Avoiding processed food is a win-win situation - good for you and good for the environment. I like this one a lot: “Take your own reusable bag to the supermarket, and try to buy foods with biodegradable/minimal packaging to cut down on waste.” I also like this tip: “Buy locally”. It’s good to bu fresh produce form farmers’ markets. You can be sure that the fruit and vegetables are not coated in chemicals and that they haven’t been on a plane for hours before they reach your plates. Locally-grown produce is healthier and you can help out people in your community too. Posted by ILR "on" 05/23 "at"09:22 PM |

Eating vegies always make me feel good ! I find they make you feel healthier and getting you into good moods! I love to have a carrot in my lunch box at school it makes me feel healthy. We have a vegie garden at mine and I find they taste 100% better then vegtables you buy from a supermarket! Posted by Cassidyiscool "on" 05/08 "at"01:15 PM |

I work at a grocery store on checkouts, so seeing some peoples diets filled with junkfood like lollies and chips is kinda gross, just that is enough to make me want to eat veges and organic food. :D Remember 5+a day keeps the doctor away Posted by jama_jj "on" 05/07 "at"08:08 PM |
| I LOVE VEGIES. I make a bowl and mash them [but not too mashed!] and tip gravy over - so filling and good for yourbody! *the thought is making me hungry now!* ... Also people should plant their own vegies ... you don’t need a big garden neccessiraly - it’s fun and saves money! Posted by sunflower80 "on" 05/07 "at"07:48 PM |
