What do my food cravings mean?

What do my food cravings mean?

For the most part, food cravings are emotionally driven; hunger is a physical need.

When you have an intense food craving that you find hard to control, it can be helpful to stop and ask yourself what it is you’re really craving. It could be something emotional (e.g. you feel sad and want to eat a block of chocolate to ‘treat’ yourself), or it could be genuinely physical (e.g. your blood sugar is low and you need a pick me up). Working out what your cravings actually mean will help you deal with them when they hit, and the emotion behind the impulse.

Of course, cravings aren’t always a bad thing, but if you find yours often lead to binge eating it might be time to tackle your cravings and show them who’s boss! It’s no secret that minimising our intake of ‘treat’ foods is way better for our health, but sometimes we get so in the habit of eating things that aren’t good for us we forget how easy it is - and how good it feels! - to nourish our bodies with food that is!

Tip! Got a treat you crave a lot? Find a healthy version and go for that most of the time when a craving hits. It’ll make the real thing more delish when you do indulge!

I have so many food allergies and intolerences that you’d be here all day reading the list - unfortunately it’s the foods that make me sick that I often crave! My specialist says that what you crave is often bad for you, which is why I crave fresh fish or fresh fruit - yes I’m intolerent to fresh fruit. It can be an utter pain! But I’m craving the nutrients in the food, not the actual food. So, when I crave fish I make sure I eat something high in Omega 3 (Nuts, spinach or whatever) or fruit I take a vitamin suppliment. It’s a tricky ballance but being aware of why it happens and what do definately helps.

But sometimes…you just need a piece of chocolate (which I’m also intolerent too…)

I go weeks without chocolate…and then all of a sudden I’ll crave it. And will get up and go to the shop to get a snickers in the middle of the night. So weird.

Years ago when I committed to living a healthier lifestyle I began to listen to my cravings in a different way.  Instead of just giving in to them all the time I started asking them why they were happening.  Boredom & solitude were triggers that would send me to food.  I also love baking at home and found it hard to stop eating once started sometimes.  I now eat a balanced, varied diet getting all the good stuff and the occasional treat and I have control back. I rarely crave things now as my body is getting everything it needs and I don’t feel guilty when eating treats as I know I’m not having them in excess.
