Strong arms and shoulders for summer anyone?
Cutting potatoes wear you out? Arms get achy when you dry your hair? Could your nana beat you at an arm wrestle?
Improve your upper body strength with these three easy exercises!
Girly lifts!
Push ups are a basic but effective exercise for increasing upper body strength - a couple sets a day, and you’ll beat Nana in no time! Get into a standard ‘push up position’, but with your knees and calves on the ground. Your hands should be flat on the floor, directly beneath your shoulders, fingers pointing forward. Keeping your core engaged, slowly lower your upper body until you’re a few inches off the floor, then slowly push up again and into start position. Do 2-3 sets of 10 if you can.
Tip: Once your strength starts to increase, try the above but with your legs fully extended (i.e. no knees!)
Hover Slide
Lie on your tummy on the floor. Looking down at the floor, raise your body so you’re balanced on your toes and forearms (your elbows should be directly below your shoulders, and your hands resting in front of you, loosely clasped). Keep your butt in line with the rest of your body - i.e. no sticking it in the air! Staying in this position, and keeping centred, push your body forward over your hands, then reverse over your toes in a smooth, sliding movement. Do this for about 30 seconds, break, then repeat.
Tip: It’s the same movement as those long plank swings! Fun!
Surfing
Summer’s almost over, so make the most of the hot sun and warm sea while you can! Surfing is a great way to increase upper body strength: all that paddling, pushing to a stand and fighting the surf is a definite workout - especially when it’s cranking! There’s also carrying the board back to the car when you’re done…unless you find a hottie to help you out of course!
Tip: Bodyboarding more your thing? It’s a great upper body workout too! Check out more arm exercises here!
