How eating breakfast keeps you in shape

We’ve all been lectured about eating breakfast – but here’s the 247 Girl low down on how breakfast can help you control weight, concentrate during the day and avoid those desperate dashes to the dairy!

The word breakfast is self explanatory - breaking the fast. You haven’t eaten since the night before and your stomach is expecting a little action to rev up the engines for the day ahead.

But still we think we can get away with no breakfast – or at best a piece of toast – minus the crusts. Skipping breakfast is like starting a running race behind everyone else. You disadvantage yourself physically, mentally and socially, and catching up to everyone else becomes almost impossible.

How does eating breakfast help keep me in shape?

Going without breakfast can lead to sliding energy levels and over indulging later in the day. When you feel fuller for longer, you won’t be racing to the tuck shop for a sausage roll for morning tea – or heading to the cookie jar after school.

What does eating breakfast do for my marks?

According to Kelloggs, a 12 year old who misses breakfast will have the alertness of a 70 year old during the day! That’s a lot of aging in a short space of time! Breakfast fuels thinking, mental alertness and concentration – so your brain gets a serious advantage – you’re likely to remember more of what you learn and do better in tests and exams. (Also, your friends will love you eating breakfast too – as you’re likely to be less grumpy with food in your stomach!)

What does eating breakfast do for my body?

Eating breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and gives you the energy to do all the amazing things you do throughout the day! As well as protecting against late afternoon snacking, breakfast gives you the energy to keep physically fit too. No energy = no motivation or desire to get physical. With a bit of energy on board, that run you promised yourself doesn’t seem impossible.

What if I can’t face breakfast first thing?

No problems here. If you don’t feel hungry the minute you wake up just eat a little later in the morning, as the slide in energy could just see you reaching for a nasty pick-me-up like a chocolate muffin or sausage roll!

Breakfast Tips

On most days you should be 100% focused on eating a mind and body fuelling breakfast. Be sure to include fluids to avoid dehydration (we’ve all seen those Pump ads, dehydration can make you do some pretty stupid things!) Make your first choice water but it that’s too boring, try adding freshly squeezed orange juice or a slice of lemon or lime.

Add fruit, wholegrain bread and cereal to your daily routine to keep your bowels working perfectly and to give you carbohydrates for sustenance. Try and avoid caffeine or lower your intake. Have a smoothie instead, with a banana for brainpower.

Keep some on-the-go breakfasts handy for rushed mornings. While we don’t suggest you make a habit of rushing breakfast, grab a banana or a sandwhich to take away. Bars such as Fruity Bix and drinks like Up and Go are only ok if you’re really stuck as they tend to be high in fat and sugar.
