Going on the Pill

Sex…Q. I’m 16 and I want to go on the contraceptive pill to help deal with my period. Does my mum need to know? How can I ask her without getting embarrassed, or her thinking I’m having sex?

A. If your periods are irregular or particularly heavy, some forms of the contraceptive pill can really help. The short answer to your question is no, a doctor can legally prescribe the pill without your parents’ consent and they are bound to keep that confidential. However, it sounds like you’d like your mum to know WHY you’re on the pill so she doesn’t think you’re having sex.

If your mum understands how badly your periods are affecting you, she is more likely to agree to you going on the pill (or even suggest it!). You might even invite her to come with you to see a doctor or Family Planning Clinic to get advice. That way she’s part of the decision-making and will respect you for your openness and honesty.

Q. This might sound really dumb but some times I feel like I want to have sex and at others I’m not really sure. Is there any way to tell for sure???

A. It can be really hard to tell, but by the sounds of things you’ve got a few doubts. That in itself probably means you’re not quite ready. And no, there’s no big moment where it
becomes crystal clear! What you can do is ask yourself a few questions about why you think you should be having sex. If it has anything to do with friends, pressure from guys or just curiosity (everybody else is talking about it!) then you may not quite be ready. You need to feel ready to deal with any consequences too. Unless you’re 100% sure and want to do it for the right reasons, you could end up regretting it. Remember: No one can tell you when you’re ready for sex. That’s your decision.

Q. My BF knows I was having sex with my ex and is putting the pressure on for us to have sex but I’m not sure. My ex and I had been together for 6 months before we did it.

A. You don’t have to have sex with everyone you go out with and just because you’ve had sex with someone before, doesn’t mean you have to have sex with them again. Nobody else can tell you what’s right for you or what you should do when it comes to sex (and having sex out of a sense of obligation or guilt isn’t going to feel good either!) It’s your choice!

I would never encourage anyone to rely on the pill. So many things can alter its effectiveness. I went on it to control my monthly, & I wondered why it wasn’t working for me, turns out it was because I eat oranges & mandarins everyday and drink 4-5 cups of green tea. Wish I had been told that before. So, so lucky that I wasn’t sexually active at the time. The contraceptive pill is a toxin that the body tries to get rid of. It’s unnatural and just messes with the female system. I’m pro-protection but I think the pill is made too readily available. I will never touch it again.

i got on it and im 15, it cost me $3 and my parents never even knew about it. I definately would recommend going on it because i see so many of my friends (and not saying you’re like this) make mistakes when they get drunk and the pill offers just that bit more security. doesn’t protect against sti’d though, but still worth doing though i reckon

hey guys , the pill is great but also some side affects . its always best to discuss your options with your gp or helth nurse and fins out whats best before jumping in and taking it . you might find a better option that suits you ! with the pill alot of younger girls find it harder to remember to take it =/ and find they end up pregnant =/ the depo provera is another option which is a injection usually injected into your buttock (it sounds scary but atleast you dont need to remember to take it every morning) you just need to get one every three months . make sure you explore all your options . and its always nice to take along a friend , or as i do your bf . =]

Im 20 and ive just stoped using the pill after being on it for 6 months. My bf and i have been together for 1 year and we are having sex.
I noticed after going on the pill that my sex drive droped alot, i wasnt taking the sugar pills so i wasnt getting my period and i think that had something to do with it. And now that im not taking them ive noticed the difference already.
