Is my flow supposed to stay the same throughout my period?
This is the place you’ll get straight answers about first periods, using tampons and pads, PMS, period pains, mood swings and heaps more.
Myth: Your flow stays the same from the start to the finish of your period.
Made up! This one’s totally made up! The truth is, the first two to three days are the heaviest (and the most uncomfortable) days of your period. That’s because your body’s busy getting rid of 70% of your total menstrual flow during these days. That’s why you can feel bloated, get cramping and your tampon or pad needs changing more often!
Tip: It may seem like you’re losing heaps of blood during a period, but the truth is, we lose about 1-6 tablespoons of menstrual fluid over several days. Around one third of this is actually blood – the rest is tissue from the uterine wall.
Truth: You should use different levels of absorbency during your period.Straight up! Give yourself a tick as this one’s TRUE! Using the same level of absorbency pad or tampon on each day of your period is like wearing the same clothes in summer and winter! You need to match the product you use to the level of your flow.
Our advice is to be aware of whether your flow is light, medium or heavy and use a product that’s designed for that level of flow. Here’s how to choose:
YOUR FLOW - AND PRODUCT TO USE
Light: Mini tampon or light pad - lowest absorbency
Medium: Regular tampon or pad - medium absorbency
Heavy: Super tampon or pad - highest absorbency
If you’re using tampons: Using the right level of absorbency will make your tampon feel more comfortable to insert, wear and remove - especially on light or medium flow days.
If you’re using pads: Change your pad around every two to four hours during the day – or when it becomes uncomfortable or looks pretty well-covered. If it’s covered faster than this, go up a level of absorbency. If it takes longer, go down a level!
