6 secrets to breaking a habit
It’s easy to want to be fit and eat better. It’s a whole lot harder to do! So with New Year’s resolutions looming, we’ve given you a guide to getting into good habits - and ditching bad ones!
-
Take things one step at a time
- Set achievable goals
- Reward yourself along the way
- Don’t be put off if you have a bad day
…and before you know it you’ll find yourself breaking habits you thought you’d never be able to change. Instead of feeling stink about all the things you ‘should’ do differently, keep it simple and you’ll kick bad habits for good!
6 great tips on how to break bad habits and live healthily
Work it out - naming the habit will help you confront it
1. Decide to change, and have reasons why
2. Stick with it - make clear goals to help you get there
3. Keep it simple
4. Do it with someone
5. Tell friends and family so they can support you
How to keep bad habits broken:
- Put them behind you
- Know your weaknesses, and don’t tempt yourself!
- Replace bad habits with good ones
- Forgive yourself when you slip up - we all do!
- Be proud of yourself - you did it!
Find a reason!
Do your homework. Understanding why it’s good to exercise every day, or to eat well will help you make healthy choices naturally. Guilt only gets you so far.
Know what foods do to you. Learning about what it means to live healthy takes the pressure off - for example, knowing how different foods affect your mood, energy and body function will help you decide what you will and won’t put in your body.
Make it normal. If you think about food and exercise in terms of healthy living, not a list of do’s and don’ts you’ll find it’s a lot easier to identify bad habits and choose to change.
Stick at it. Habits can be hard to break, but if you’re determined you can do anything you set your mind to. Half the battle is starting the fight - take it slow and reward yourself along the way and you’ll find breaking a habit ain’t so hard.
