3 steps to breaking bad eating habits

Break bad habits!By the time we’re teenagers, we’ve often developed some pretty bad eating habits – but that doesn’t mean they have to be ours for life. Here’s three ways to adopt healthy eating habits you can easily stick to for the rest of your life!

Step 1. Start small
Expecting to change bad eating habits overnight is unrealistic - and that kind of pressure can make you want to give up before you’ve even started! Set small, realistic goals you know you can achieve, and maintain the change once you get there.

Example #1:
If you think you need to lose a large amount of weight, be realistic and don’t try to lose it all at once! Aim to lose a small amount within a set amount of time, and to be maintaining that lower weight six months from now. A doctor will be able to tell you if you’re a healthy weight for your age and height, and help you establish a healthy eating plan.

Example #2:
If you love eating treats, instead of telling yourself you can’t have ANY, limit your intake. Instead of eating the whole block of chocolate for example, have a couple of pieces - you’ll enjoy a treat way more if you don’t overdo it!

Drink water!Example #3:
If you always eat right before bed, instead of banning that late night snack - turn it into a healthy option! Ditch the cheese toast for hummus and rice crackers, or the tub of ice-cream for yoghurt and fruit.

Remember: Try to eat healthy meals and snacks at regular intervals and drink lots of water.

Step 2. Be practical
Us girls tend to think of food and weight loss in emotional terms - but this can really mess up our eating. Telling ourselves we aren’t ‘allowed’ certain foods because they’ll make us gain weight can often make us crave them even more! It is better to tell yourself what you CAN eat!

We’re constantly bombarded with different ideas about how we should look and what we should weigh. It’s only natural we want to rebel against those ‘rules’ for emotional reasons - forgetting that our eating habits affect our overall health.

TIP: At the end of the day, eating is a necessity, and it’s also something we should enjoy! Fuel your body with healthy food and you’ll feel better for it! An unhealthy diet doesn’t just affect our weight - it can lead to other health problems too.

Remember: Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring! There are plenty of fun, yummy ways to eat healthy food.

Step 3. Be patient
Another key thing to remember is that lasting change often takes time. Don’t stress out about having to change all your bad habits at once - choose one or two to focus on at a time, and give yourself time to turn your eating around.

Tip: Regular exercise helps us maintain a healthy weight and energy levels - and it’s also good for our overall health!

Try to adopt the following five ‘good’ habits:

1. Eat a variety of foods each day from the four food groups

2. Eat more fruit and vegetables

3. Eat regularly including a variety of healthy snacks

4. Choose food and drinks low in fat, salt and sugar

5. Make water and reduced-fat milk your first choice of drink!

Tip:
Eating healthy can be really hard if your mates eat pies and cake three meals a day! Talk to your friends about making a group effort to eat healthier and get fit - it’ll help keep you motivated!
