Food Facts: True or False?
The myth: A muesli bar is a good breakfast!
Say what?! While ‘muesli’ is, in theory, a healthy breakfast, many mueslis are high in both fat and sugar - and muesli bars are just the same! Some muesli bars even have as much fat and sugar as a chocolate bar and sometimes more! If you have to eat on the run, go for muesli bars that are low in sugar and fat. Check the label to make sure you’re starting your day with a dose of real energy, not a sugar high!
Tip: Snacking on the run? Have a sandwich or a piece of fruit and you’ll stay fuller longer!
The myth: I can eat whatever I want if I work it off!
Say what?! In theory, if we burn any excess calories we consume (i.e. the energy we don’t use in our daily activity) by exercising, we won’t gain weight. Maybe so, but our eating choices affect more than our weight - our teeth, skin and overall health are also affected when we eat a lot of food that’s high in fat or sugar. Even if we’re really active, ‘treat’ foods should only make up a small part of our diet!
Tip: Avoid a ‘eat now, pay later’ mentality! Consider your overall health when you make eating and exercise choices.
