Food cravings - is it really a problem?
The myth: Craving something means I need it!
Say what?! Cravings are emotionally driven; hunger is a physical need. It might seem like a great idea to devour a block of chocolate to cheer yourself up - but your body probably won’t feel that happy in half an hour! It’s not wrong to satisfy our cravings, but minimising our intake of ‘treat’ foods is better for our health.
Tip! Got a treat you crave a lot? Find a healthy version and go for that most of the time when a craving hits. It’ll make the real thing more delish when you do indulge!
The myth: A fat free diet is a healthy diet!
Say what?! While too much fat is bad for our health, totally eliminating it is too. Getting enough of the right kinds of fats is essential for a healthy mind and body. Keep your intake of saturated and trans fats to a minimum, but be sure to include a small amount of ‘healthy’ fats like those found in salmon, avocados and nuts in your diet every day. For more on why we need fat, read this.
Tip! Check the label of ‘low fat’ and ‘fat free’ products as many are high in sugar.
