Foods for healthy skin
A healthy, varied diet is not only good for your weight - it’ll keep your skin, hair and nails looking great too!
Skin. While there is no magic food for your skin your diet does affect how your skin looks and ages. When it comes to eating right for our skin, variety is key! Eating a good mix of healthy foods and drinking plenty of water will help ensure your skin is well hydrated and getting all the vitamins and minerals it needs to look its best.
Tip: if you want the best skin you can get, choose more wholegrains and fill up on fruit and vegetables rather than lollies and cake!
Vitamin C, E and beta carotene are powerful antioxidants that slow down damage to your skin. Many fruit and vegetables are excellent sources of both vitamin A and betacarotene, while wholegrains and nuts are excellent sources of Vitamin E.
Hair & nails
Like our skin, our hair and nails need a range of nutrients to look their best. Protein, iron and essential fatty acids, like those found in salmon and sardines, are needed to keep our hair and nails growing and in good condition.
Top foods for healthy hair and nails include:
*Oily fish
*Eggs
*Vegies (especially orange, yellow, red and green ones!)
*Fruit
*Whole grains
*Nuts
*Lean meats, chicken, seafood, legumes
*Low fat dairy
Did you know? Spirulina is rich in zinc, silica and B vitamins, meaning a regular dose is great for your hair, nails and skin!
We can learn a lot about our health from our nails! Example:
Hang nails can = not enough vitamin C
Dry and brittle nails can = not enough calcium
White bands across nails can = not enough protein
White spots can = not enough zinc
Very dry and rounded nails can = low in vitamin B12
Did you know? The B vitamin Biotin is essential for healthy skin, hair and nails. Good sources include liver, eggs, salmon, avocado and whole grains.

Spirulina is actually a green algae which is rich in protein and iron, and has a lot of vitamins and minerals. It comes in powder form or tablet form, but most people prefer the tablets because of the taste. It’s great for your metabolism and gives you energy. You can get spirulina at all health stores and most supermarkets (: Posted by Lauren "on" 01/22 "at"08:06 PM |

Other ways to relieve DRY HAIR that have helped me are: Wash your every few days rather than every day. Using a quality shampoo - or a natural shampoo like Natural Instinct. Condition your hair daily and ensure you leave it in your hair for the recommended time the product says on it for best results Only use tepid water - or as cool as you can go when washing/conditioning your hair. Hot water causes the hairs to become drier - does something to the structure of the hair - the cooler water makes a HUGE difference to my hair. Towel dray your hair - don’t blow dry Use a natural oil instead of some other product in your hair - like the Body Shop’s ‘Mohoi Oil’ - only a few drops required. ($40 bottle has lasted me a year+) See how that conbination works Remember also, if you have dry nails, it takes ages for your nails to grow out - so the dryness you see may be from a bad diet you were on weeks or months ago depending on how fast your nails grow Posted by TaniaS "on" 01/15 "at"08:19 PM |
