Joining a Gym

Joining a Gym

Thinking about joining a gym? We take a look at three things to consider before signing up.

1. Location: It may seem like a no brainer, but the closer your gym is to your house, work or school, the more likely you are to go on a regular basis. If you’re running short on time and your gym is a 10 minute car ride each way, it’s going to be the first thing that gets dropped from your schedule. And if you’re not going to your gym regularly, you’re wasting money!

2. What’s on offer: What do you want to get out of your gym? Are group classes your thing, or do you like it to be just you and your iPod when you work out? Do you want your gym to have a swimming pool and team sports facilities? Make sure what’s on offer suits your needs and that the gym’s schedule fits in with yours too.

3. Price: Be smart when selecting what gym to go to. If you don’t have a lot of money, look for local community gyms and recreation centres, or gyms run by government bodies - like university gyms - as these are likely to be cheaper.

The big thing here is to shop around. Get a list of gyms in your area and call them all to see which ones offer the services you want at a price you can afford.

A great way to join the gym without having to get locking into long contracts, is look on trade me for a membership that has only a couple of months left on it that can be transferred into your name, that way the contract will be rolling and you cancelling anytime without paying the huge fees.

Also I find the best way to stay motivated for the gym is mix it up, classes can be fun but the same thing every other day..snooze.

I’ve started going to the gym, and I love the classes! The instructors are so motivating and push you further (I ususally find it hard to motivate myself to exercise at home). My gym’s just opened up so it’s relatively small at the moment.

I find it’s easier to find time to fit the gym in the morning before school, and I go to the classes after work.

I think it’s also important to have friendly staff on hand, that come over and check out how you’re going, and that you are using the equipment correctly. In some of the larger gyms, you can get the feeling of just being another number.

I find that going to a gym can be really fun if you go with a bunch of your friends, then you can socialise and do excersise, its good, specially if you dont like doing excersise on your one. I personally find excersising by myself to be really unmotivating
