Everything you need to know about hair extensions

HairEveryone knows what hair extensions are, but do you know what’s actually involved? We did some research and found there’s a lot more to lengthening your locks than meets the eye!

What type’s right? There are three main types of hair extensions – Strand by strand, weave (or weft) and clip on. Here’s how they work…

Strand by strand. This technique involves gluing small strands of extension hair, one by one, to small sections of your own hair. As your hair grows the extensions start to come loose and after about two months you have to take them out.

Weave or weft. A ‘Weave’ or ‘Weft’ is one long track of hair that is attached at the top and free flowing at the bottom. Each weave of hair is french plaited into a section of your own hair, and then sewn into place (using a special needle and thread made for hair). This option lasts around 8 weeks, but once the weave has been taken out, you can get it sewn in again.

Clip Ons. This is the quickest and cheapest option. Just clip them into your own hair whenever you want and then take them out before you go to bed.

Real vs Fake? Extensions come in two forms, real and synthetic hair. Real hair is more expensive but it can be dyed and you can use heated styling tools on it too. Synthetic hair is a lot cheaper but will melt if you heat it and you have to match the colour of the extension to the colour of your natural hair. You also have to take more care with fake extensions, as they tend to get tangled easier.

What’s the cost? First you have to buy the extensions, and then you have to pay for them to be applied, so the cost depends on what type of hair you go for, the type of extension you choose to get done, and who you get to do them. If you’re seriously considering getting extensions you’re best bet is to talk to your hairdresser about it. They should be able to recommend someone good, and give you an idea of how much it will be, but be prepared to save some serious dosh! You could be looking at anything up to $2000!

The Verdict? Go for clip ons. It might take longer to do your hair in the morning, but if you get sick of them, you can just stop wearing them - and they’re not going to break the bank (too much).

I would go for the clip ons because I have heard some horror stories of how the extensions that are glued or sewn have become all ratty and have caused damaged hair

I got pretty sick for a while and lost a lot of hair due to treatment (which is finally over!) and my hair is now growing back :D however, when it was really thin I was so embarrassed about it so I decided to get extensions - WOW I would never turn back! They have given me so much confidence and even though I won’t get them when my hair has all grown back, they are so worth the time and money in my situation. My advice - only go for the more expensive options if you really need to, otherwise just wait for your hair to grow out and/or get clip-ins!
