How to make the most of a job drought
OK, we’re giving it to you straight up. The recession ain’t over yet - but experts are saying the economy is starting to turn the corner. It could be a while before the job market recovers - which means now is a good time to think about and prepare for opportunities in the future.
How to make the most of a job drought. It might not seem like it, but it’s actually a really good time to be making some choices about your career. Here are some tactics to help you make the most of the job ‘drought’:
Study. There’s never been a better time to be studying. By the time you graduate the economic situation won’t be as dire, meaning you’ll be in a great position to land a job you love! In the mean time, get all the skills you can.
Keep your mind and options open. The career you think you’re going to love may not pan out for you, so be sure to investigate what it’s really all about. Be careful not to get too specialised or narrow in your choices. The job market is changing hugely. New technologies mean there are a lot of job opportunities available to us that no other generation has had.
Be bold. Just because there’s less money to throw around doesn’t mean businesses aren’t investing in their staff. Some companies will quite happily help fund part time study if it helps employees grow their skills. Don’t be afraid to ask!
Intern/work voluntarily. All the cutbacks mean a lot of companies are low on staff, and could totally benefit from an extra pair of hands and helpful attitude! You might be given more responsibility than you would if they were fully staffed.
Consider a gap year. Life experience looks good on a CV!
Do something you love. While it might seem like there’s heaps of pressure to know ‘what you want to do’, the reality is, most of us just don’t when we leave school! And that goes for a lot of us here at 24/7 Girl. Along the way we’ve met heaps of cool girls doing all kinds of stuff - some of it by design and some of it by accident. The thing they all have in common is that they’ve found something they love. For ideas and inspiration, check them out here.
Plus if you’re at school, you’ve probably heard of Student Workchoice Day. This is another amazing resource that helps students in Year 12 and 13 figure out what they want to do, by experiencing a day in a real workplace.
