Name: Julia Dick
Age: 23
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m the CAD Operator at Karen Walker.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. I am in charge of digitizing or creating digital pattern files for each style in the collection. Once the pattern is in the system, I communicate with the patternmakers about any changes they would like to make. I then grade each pattern and then create a ‘marker’ for each style. A marker is like a puzzle, fitting together all the pattern pieces for that style so we can cut it in the most economical way.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The team at Karen Walker are so great, I really enjoy working with all the girls here, plus the clothes are a definite bonus.
Q. Any downsides?
A. There can be upwards of 200 styles in a season so this can mean working long hours at busy times.
Q. Did you study? Whereabouts?
A. I studied for two years at NZ Fashion Tech.
Q. What did you like about studying there?
A. In the second year of study it was a lot more about creating patterns and making your own designs, that freedom was really beneficial. Also the introduction to CAD or PAD in the second year, is what gave me an opportunity to do what I do now.
Q. Any advice for girls who are hoping to work in a similar role (as to how they can get into it)?
A. An internship or work experience with a designer you would like to work for is a great idea. If you are a really hard worker, and really enthusiastic you will get noticed.
