So you wanna…work in Travel?

Name: Jade Thorby
Age: 21
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. Travel Consultant at United Travel Hamilton
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. A typical day for me would be organising new brochures that come in, getting mail, checking my ‘queues’ on my CRS (flight bookings that have messages for me, ie seats confirmed, any flight changes, ticketing time limits etc).
The rest of the day would be dealing with any customer enquiries, working on client files, quotes and bookings, organising travel documents for clients to collect, processing payments etc.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The best thing about my job would be the satisfaction I get out of seeing my clients come back happy and getting their feedback from their trip! It is a great feeling to know that you have helped them organise a perfect trip away!
It’s great having promotional nights – whether the night is put on by my office or whether a supplier is in town to update us on their products. It is a great opportunity to network with your suppliers – you never know when you might need them!
Another thing that I had better mention, are the opportunities of travelling. This is a great way to further your knowledge on a destination and have fun while doing it! I won a cruise recently - although it didn’t come easy – after volunteering myself to help my Blue Lagoon Representative do her presentation, she dared me to wear a coconut bra for the rest of the night and she promised she would GIVE me a cruise – which I did! Great night and lots of laughs!
Q. Any downsides?
A. It can be frustrating when you have worked hard on getting prices for a client and they go and book with another agent! But besides that there isn’t really anything that would be a ‘downside’
Q. Did you study? Whereabouts?
A. I studied at Sir George Seymour College in Hamilton.
Q. What did you like about studying there?
A. Sir George was an excellent place to study and gain my qualifications to be able to launch my career in the Travel and Tourism industry. The tutors are always helping you and are a big friendly bunch, who are always up for a laugh!
Everyone at Sir George makes you feel so welcome and I always enjoy popping in for a visit now and again for a catch up with familiar faces!
Q. Any advice for girls who are hoping to work in a similar role (as to how they can get into it)?
A. I would highly recommend to others who are interested in a career in the travel industry, to study one of the courses at Sir George – they are very comprehensive and practical in how/what is taught. Sir George also work closely with travel agencies in NZ and work with prospective employers who are looking for a new consultant.
Doing some work experience once a week or so definitely helps to! All of this will give you an extra edge when you start applying for jobs in the travel industry, that will make employers choose you as their new consultant or whatever else you are aiming to be in the travel industry!
