So you wanna be a Financial Adviser?
Bahar Simsir
Financial Adviser
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. Associate Adviser, SAIPrivate Investments Ltd in Melbourne, Australia. It’s a boutique financial services company.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Paraplanning in the strategic advisory team. My key responsibilities include preparing draft initial client reports and investment reports for funds under management, preparing financial accounts, risk tolerance analysis, tax return analysis - including capital gains tax, pension calculations and insurance.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. It’s pretty gratifying when you help out a client by forming not only financial but also life strategies that enable them to have peace of mind and freedom, which also reflect on their whole family. Also - the people I work with! There’s a fairly young crowd in the paraplanning world, so it’s generally a relaxed environment. Plenty of opportunities for Friday night drinks!
Q. Any downsides?
A. Not really. If I had to say something, it would have to be the sporadic times where we would have to deal with client scepticism when global markets are at a downfall. This is almost a certainty in a finance related job though. Upside of this however is that it’s a great learning experience and somewhat of a confidence booster as to how to deal with unpleasant situations going forward.
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. Through university - compulsory work placement during my 3rd year of my 4 year degree.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. Yes. At unit I graduated from BBus (Financial Planning) and just recently completed my post grad studies, where I am now a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Ongoing mandatory training is also required every year as an associate adviser/certified financial planner. You need to complete 30 hours worth each year for an associate adviser/paraplanner and 40 hours per year as a CFP.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Honesty, open handedness and a sense of humour!
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Do something you actually enjoy doing, have something to strive for and always trust your instincts. Girls are much better at this than boys!
