So you wanna be…a Chef?
Orianne Cosentino
Chef
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m a chef and I work at a restaurant in NYC called The Green Table. I also have a project called “Grill-A-Chef” as in ‘being grilled by questions’ - we give free cooking advice.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. On a restaurant day, I show up during lunch service and begin to make items on our menu that we are running low on. Sometimes I have to prepare a soup or sauté greens, make a salad dressing or toast nuts. Then I work the dinner shift ‘on the line’, as they call it, and make food as it is ordered by the customers.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The best thing about my job is that delicious food is everywhere! Anytime I eat something great or travel to a new place, I am doing something that will make me better at my job.
Q. Any downsides?
A. Long hours - and it can get hot in the summer!
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I started out studying art, so I knew I wanted to work with my hands. Coupled with a love of all things food..and that was it.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. I studied at a school in New York called the Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Honesty, humour, compassion and pride in their work. I also admire when people express themselves freely.
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Try to choose a career that fits your personality. Keep learning! There is always more to know/experience. Explore all of your interests, you never know which one will become your path. I thought of one more…always use spellcheck!!
