Inspiring Girls: Danielle Sutherland
New Zealand are sending a women’s hockey team to the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this month. We caught up with 15 year old midfielder Danielle Sutherland about representing her country.
How long have you been playing hockey for?
I started when I was six years old. My mum introduced me to the game as she played hockey as a teenager and began playing again in her later years.
How did it feel to be selected for the NZ Women’s Youth Hockey Team?
I was overwhelmed when I was selected for the New Zealand Youth team. It is a dream of mine to eventually be in the Black Sticks and I hope that going to the Youth Olympics is the beginning of my hockey career. It is an amazing opportunity to be taking part in and I am very proud to be given this opportunity to represent my country in these games.
What is being an Olympian about for you?
It’s a lot about being proud to represent your country but it is also a great privilege as this is the first Youth Olympics to be held. It is also a first taste to what the real Olympics is all about so I can commit myself in future years, as I wish to go to the Olympics.
Obviously you think sport is important - how come?
I think it is important, as it is a way to express myself in something that I am good at and that I enjoy. I also think it comes with good experiences with the places it takes you and also creates [lifelong] friendships. I am a very competitive person, so it is in my nature that sport is important to me.
How often do you train? Is it hard to juggle training with other stuff?
I train and play hockey five days a week as well as fitness work. Sometimes it is hard to find a balance between sport, school and everything else, but I manage my time with the help of my school, coaches and family. I have made sacrifices; I have to if I want to achieve my goals.
What are some of your other interests?
I have an interest in art and also photography. I also enjoy having some relaxation time with my friends and family, and going away for holidays as this helps me switch off from my hockey commitments.
Who/what inspires you?
Seeing other people excel in what they do is an inspiration to me and makes me want to follow my dreams so I can do greatly just as they have. Former Olympians are a big inspiration as I would one day like to represent New Zealand in the Olympics. I play for myself to be the best player I can be and I do the best I can for my mum and dad that have helped me achieve what I have so far.
What would you say to a room of girls, to inspire them?
Pursue your dreams and let nothing stop you, because you never know where you could end up and what opportunities you may be given. You have to make sacrifices, but at the end of the day if you love what you do it can take you amazing places and leave you with memories and friendships that will last forever.
