Tina’s first Mother’s Day!
So many girls I know always dreamed of being a mum. They mothered, nurtured and practiced on anything they could get their hands on. They dreamt of it for years.
Others wondered what it would be like, presumed they probably wouldn’t or didn’t want to. This is the camp that I belonged to - until, that is, I became pregnant. Nine curious, whirlwind and yet agonising slow months later, I found myself lying in a hospital, slightly exhausted, with a wee scrawny munchkin, covered in gunk, lying on me, with a huge grin on my face. Love at first sight.
I am now a mother to someone. The most wonderful, terrifying, fulfilling, excruciating thing that life has to offer.
Three months later, with my first Mother’s Day fast approaching I spend 90% of my time thinking, ‘oh god what have I done? Am I doing anything right? What happens if I monumentally screw this up?’ The other 10% I think, ‘oh look at what I have made, I am so clever.’
My favourite part is when she just wakes up. She looks up and smiles, I pick her up to give her a cuddle, and she stretches her little body and arches her back and sticks out her wee cute bottom and I hold her so tight. And right then at that moment I know that everything is perfect.
Come Mother’s Day I shall give myself a pat on the back and say to myself, ‘Job well done - now go forth for 20 more years and do the same.’
I might even shout myself a coffee.
