Inspiring Girl: Freya Vincent
Name: Freya Vincent
Age: 13
Job/hobby: Ballet dancer and model
Q. How long have you been dancing and how often do you do it?
A. I have been dancing for 10 years now - I used to do set dance classes three times a week and do exams, but now I have a personal trainer who helps me with my flexibility, toning and teaches me all kinds of new types of dancing. She comes once a week (we dance for 2.5-3 hours), but I love to join in open classes and I practice a lot too.
Q. What do you like about dancing?
A. I find that dancing is something I can do to get away from all the noise and frustration of day to day life. It brings a sense of peace and refreshment to your body. Creating motion to rhythm is such a delicate way to express your feelings, and that’s what dance is all about - showing your different emotions in your steps, if it’s anger or happiness.
Q. What type of dancing do you do, and what’s your favourite style?
A. At the moment I do a combination of jazz, contemporary, hip hop and ballet. Right now I think jazz is my favourite, as it is upbeat and always lifts your mood.
Q. How do you rate dance as a workout?
A. Definitely 10 out of 10! Dance is a great way to keep fit, burn calories and stay healthy.
Q. Do you perform in shows?
A. I used to compete in competitions frequently, but I’m taking a break at the moment.
Q. What keeps you motivated and focused as a dancer?
A. I guess knowing that it is keeping you fit and healthy, noticeable amounts of improvement in your posture, and uplifted moods - which of course helps your self confidence, and every girl needs a bit of that!
Q. Is it hard to fit it in with school and modelling? Sounds like you’re busy!
A. Haha. It really depends on what job I’m doing at that moment - there are busy seasons and really quiet seasons. Sometimes jobs need auditions, which sometimes happen in between school hours, so working around the times can sometimes be a bit confusing and hectic but otherwise, for now I’m managing fine.
Q. Are you involved in any other activities /sports?
A. No, not at the moment. I try to go to the gym with my dad in the week. At the moment, I’m thinking perhaps to try out for a basketball team as I am quite tall and it is a great game.
Q. How did you get into modelling?
A. I started my modelling career in Hong Kong, when I was about seven. I lived in Hong Kong for five years, and over those years I continued to do various photo shoots, catalogues and once I had the luck to fly to Taiwan for a commercial, which was very exciting! In October I went through a model camp, which has opened a lot of opportunities for me. Since then I’ve modelled clothes on the catwalk for many different designers, which is a great experience that I love! And I am about to sign a contract with one of the top agencies in New Zealand.
Q. What helps you keep going?
A. I guess, a great result - putting all your effort into what you do, and seeing a fantastic ending result makes you want to try even harder in whatever you do next.
Q. Who are some people you admire, and why?
A. Probably my mum - she has gone though so many things in her life, but never lets little things get her down. She helps children in need, and always looks at the optimistic side of everything; I admire her for that.
Q. What would you say to a room full of teenage girls?
A. To always be positive and confident about what you’re doing, Holding your head high and expressing your individuality makes people step back and admire you for who you really are and think, “Woah, she’s amazing!” Life is like a rollercoaster - it always has it’s downs to get back up again, but focusing on the top helps you to get there quicker.
Best of the rest
