Is tertiary study for you?

university lecture

What do I need to consider when planning tertiary study?

Tertiary study costs money.  Like anything you buy, you want to get value for money, so you need to find the best option. Things to ask yourself include:

* What do you want to achieve with your study?

* Is studying the only way to achieve your goal?

* How does study fit into your life?

* What changes or compromises will you have to make to your life if you choose to study?

* What is your current financial situation and how much of a financial commitment are you prepared to make toward your study?

* Will you have money to move away from home?

How do I decide on a course or qualification?

When searching for a tertiary education provider, ask yourself and the education provider:

* What entry requirements are there for the course?

* What does the course cost? Can I get a student loan?

* How long will the course take?

* Where do graduates with this qualification work?

* How well recognised is this qualification in the workforce?

* What student support services does the education provider offer? (For example, learning support, student unions, medical care, counsellors, a library, etc)

* What are the average living expenses in the town/city where the provider is?

Will I be able to study what I want?

Some universities and polytechnics have had to limit the number of student they will accept each year, because of high demand for places as well as a lack of funding.

In the 2010 Budget, the Government announced it would fund an extra 1,735 student places at universities and 3,173 student places at polytechnics in 2011. This is about 765 more places than in 2010.

However, this is still not enough to ensure everyone will be able to get into the course they want. This may affect you in several ways:

Tougher course entry requirements

Admission into university is likely to get tougher, as entry standards for many courses will be raised in 2011. The required NCEA pass rates may increase, so it pays to check requirements for courses you’re thinking about.

Changes to course and qualification options

Some government funding for tertiary education will be based on the type of qualifications that tertiary institutes offer. Qualifications that have higher success rates for graduates finding work will get higher levels of funding from the Government.

This may mean tertiary education institutes will offer fewer courses or qualifications in some subject areas.

Plan your steps for entering tertiary study

Action plans help you stay focused and organised. The ‘Going into tertiary study’ action plan will help you keep track of courses you’re interested in, their entry requirements and costs, and key dates such as enrolment deadlines.

The action plan will also help you work out what you still need to do, to make sure you don’t miss out on an important step.

Where can I get more information?

* Go to career expos. These are held in most main centres, and are a great way to get advice and useful information.

* Talk to your careers adviser.

* Talk to tertiary education providers.  Many have a careers office and liaison staff to advise students. Make an appointment to go to see them.

* Go to open days at tertiary providers.

* Talk to your whānau or other people in your community.

Comon Discuss It..
I am currently in my 2nd year at University and i’m absolutely loving it! I didn’t know EXACTLY what i wanted to do until the middle of year 13 pretty much! Throughout my childhood I played the violin and piano and I always dreamed of being a violinist, pianist, chef, silverfern (i’m 158cm tall, but anythings possible, right? HAHA!) and then in my later years I wanted to study music professionally or to be a food technologist or nutritionist. I finally decided I wanted to study Hospitality Management…im currently studying this at AUT and am absolutely loving it! I would definitely recommend this to anyone that has a passion for hospitality smile
