Effects of alcohol
We all have one too many drinks from time to time, but there’s a difference between having an occasional big night and consistently drinking to get wasted.
If you’re a big binge drinker (5-10+ drinks in one sitting on a regular basis), you could be doing your body, mind and emotions a whole lot of harm. Instead of trying to ‘keep up’ with your friends by knocking back the booze, think of alcohol as something to be savoured and enjoyed - and then savour and enjoy it! Better to respect your limits than spending your night puking in the gutter, no?
We all have different limits and it’s totally fine if your ‘tolerance’ is lower than that of your friends! (And cheaper!)
Did you know?
*Alcohol is a ‘depressant’ that slows brain activity. If you’re feeling crap before you start drinking, drinking heaps may only make you feel a whole lot worse.
*Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream in as little as 5-10 minutes, and women tend to absorb alcohol faster than guys because our bodies contain less water.
*Alcohol affects different people differently - body weight, metabolism, gender and body chemistry are just some of the things affecting how we react.
*Drinking large amounts of alcohol at one time or very quickly can cause alcohol poisoning, which can lead to coma or even death.
*Alcohol is a drug, and mixing it with any other drug can cause nausea, vomiting, blackouts, heart problems and breathing difficulties.
It takes some people years to break bad drinking habits they learnt when they were young. If you know someone with a drinking problem you’ll know how awful the effects of alcohol abuse can be.
Avoid getting too drunk too quickly by:
*Having a proper meal before you start drinking.
*Also drinking water while you’re out.
*Try to drink no more than one drink an hour, with a cut off after three or four drinks (or less if your tolerance is lower).
If all your good intentions tend to go out the window once you start drinking, you could also help yourself out by only having a limited amount of cash on you when you go out, and/or ask a friend to put you in a cab or pick you up at a certain time.
If you or someone you know has a problem with binge drinking it might be helpful to talk about it. Talk to someone you trust, or give Youthline a call (0800 376 633). Check out youthline.org.nz for more info.

| The only real reason people have fun when they are drunk is because they are with friends! Why don’t people just hang out with friends, maybe have a couple of drinks but not get completely wasted - instead of poisoning thier bodys and doing something they will regret? Alcohol pretty much just kills brain cells, thats why we get a hangover. Best way to get rid of a hangover, drink plenty of water, stay off caffiene and get plenty of sleep. | honestly i don’t see the appeal, the alcoholic drinks aren’t as nice as regular drinks, you can get taken advantage of and do things you regret, and then i the morning you spew, why is that fun?????? Posted by Abbie009 "on" 03/20 "at"01:44 PM |

i really enjoyed this article, its makes it clear and precise. I really do recommend the bit about having a meal before you drink. it is essential to line your stomach with a decent feed, and i know people say eating is cheating, but your not cheating if you hvnt started drinking. + having a meal keeps you warm, (b4 the alcohol blanket kicks in2 action) and allows u to last the whole nite!! and also makes u handle your alcohol heaps better. cheers 4 da article =) Posted by smit "on" 03/17 "at"07:26 AM |
