Effects of weed

Effects of weed

Marijuana affects different people differently, depending on how strong it is and how it’s taken.

We all react to substances - from caffeine to cocaine - differently and it’s exactly the same with weed. A chemical called THC is found in marijuana, and that’s what causes a person to get high. THC is absorbed into your bloodstream through the lungs, and causes the brain to release a chemical that makes you feel euphoric, or high.

For the most part, smoking weed relaxes people - but getting stoned can also make you feel paranoid or anxious and impair your reaction times and judgement. It can also worsen or heighten the risk of depression and other mental illnesses. That said, in some countries it’s legal to use weed medicinally, and debate abounds over whether or not it should be decriminalised or legalised entirely.

At the end of the day it’s important to remember it’s currently illegal to possess, sell or use marijuana in New Zealand. If you choose to use weed anyway, please inform yourself of the risks - and be safe!

Remember: mixing weed with alcohol and other drugs can be dangerous.

Marijuana affects your: mind, body, emotions, relationships, hunger and - if you get caught with it - it could affect your freedom. For more on the effects of marijuana have a read of this.

i know people who smoke weed just to relax, recreationally, and often ‘cause they have rough stuff going on in their lives. i think that marijuana use is something that has to be judged case by case because you make generalisations

I agree with a lot of you, it affects everyone different due to many different factors, personally I’m not a fan but I’d way rather hang around people who are stoned rather than a bunch of drunks. And as with a lot of vices there are some who have a flutter and those who do things in excess, Everything in moderation people!

my brother uses weed, and it’s really hurting family life now, like, he’s dropped out of school, and has NO motivation to do anything, and it really is hard seeing him like that when he used to be so cool in my eyes, and now he just sits around home all day, or hangs out with his friends getting stoned and not coming home for days.

I think for a lot of people, weed becomes the ‘thing to do’ at the weekend with makes, and once you’ve started you can’t stop, otherwise you’d be losing your friends. It makes me so sad how many of my friends do it. I’ve not tried it, but surely there are other ways to have a good time without depending on screwing with the chemicals in your body?
When I first came to new zealand i was amazed by how common it was… but i suppose if it was between alcohol and drugs, which is worse?
Posted by ejmuffin "on" 04/21 "at"09:45 PM
Disgusting, when you smell someone like it or see them doing it i just think how stupid, why would you do that to your body

I agree with you that weed is not a good choice- especially not if you’re going to mix it with alcohol or other drugs- because it can cause you to get hospitalised! I have a friend, we used to be reallly close, before he started doing marijuana. Since he’s done weed his WHOLE attitude towards life changed- he started wagging school, hitting girls, getting really bad acne and failed level 1 NCEA. Personally, I hate drugs! I have lost a great friend over weed, but all we can do is keep helping that person to stop doing drugs.. If marijuana is used for medicinal use then it’s fine, but if it’s used for having a ‘good time’ then think twice, because at that moment it might make you giggle and make things look ‘buzzy’ but in the long run- you could lose all your friends and have a whole different, negative attitud!

I think everyone reacts and feels differently about it. I must admit it has its pros and cons but as does alcohol! Yet that is not illegal??? It almost always tears families and friends apart and unlike most drugs it causes fights, depression and angered personalities, its horrendous for your health and has no benefits what so ever, yet people do not take as much concern to it as they do with weed, or any drug for that matter. I myself, am a successful student who has always maintained high grades, i love my family and friends and i have never had any conflicts or issues with anyone, and I can now -honestly- say im thankful for the drugs, I am now healthy physically and mentally, im more confident, I now engage in almost every activity and most of all im happy ..and not because im high. Because, i feel more.. More everything! Ever since I started its like the world has reopened to me. I know they have a bad rep but it has been the COMPLETE opposite for me (: even off them I feel amazing.. Within myself, im never angry and nothing gets me down, even off the drugs, im more in synch, with myself and the world. Its like, im learning about myself for the first time. You may run drugs down, but whether it is frowned upon by society it has amazing wonders, not for trips. For me. And no surprisingly enough, i didn’t start because i thought it was ‘cool’ or i wanted to fit in, in fact my first time was a joint, by myself and back then not one person even knew and still now its hard to tell. But now, its just part of my daily life, i embrace it and anything else with open arms, its helped me, and im happy to say im no longer bulimic nor have depression, I can truthfully say im happy and healthy, Yet I could still stop when I please and would be fine to do so. But its like cake!! Why give up something so divine (: when its time I shall, but im a teenager, im experimenting and simply having fun, my life has never been better, in school or work with friends and family. And over all.. Myself (:

I think keep this in mind…
If you smoke, your whole family is… Coz we have to pick the pieces when everything gets all broken .....
Posted by Lexilove "on" 03/03 "at"09:43 PM
I think once you smoke it, you either like it or you dont. Its fully your own discision but its defintly addictive and soo not worth the monney you spend on! I dont think people can judge others for smoking it though coz its diffrent for some

It’s great you’re letting everyone know all the things about weed. It’s amazinf how many people around me that smoke it because they think it’s cool when it’s really NOT.
Posted by MelissaW "on" 02/21 "at"04:52 PM
I know so many people who smoke this daily it’s crazy. They are all so indenial of the long term effects. The only way I think it’s alright is when it’s prescribed for tumors and people with life threatening illness’s other than that, I really don’t see the point in it.

Weed defiantly affects everyone differently, Ive never tried it but i have experienced being what you would call ‘room stoned’ and it was horrible ! I had an incredibly fast heart rate and thought i was about to have a heart attack. But i know of a guy who’s really calm and relaxed when he smokes it and then there’s this girl i know who get violent whenever she smokes it. So yeah, it affects everyone differently. I also have noticed that a guy i know who smokes it on a daily basis is constantly coughing, and then this lady i know who smokes it (also daily) is perfectly fine, she doesn’t cough or anything. I personally think that we should be able to have marijuana prescribed to people who are in a lot of pain and no prescription drug eases their pain. I know of a lady with a flesh eating disorder who smokes marijuana because no prescription drugs eased her pain, she even had prescription drugs sent from America, in the end the doctor suggested she try weed. When she did, she was pain free !!

Everyone uses drug on time or another, panadol, cough medicine, marajuana. But then someone put a label on it an called them class A, B or C. How bout alcohol…put a label on that. It’s certainly an individuals choice. You do or you don’t. Just don’t make other peoples choices affect your own choices.

I think weed affects everyone in different ways. I know some people who smoke daily and it doesn’t affect their every day life. However, when I smoked daily it made me paranoid, I had low self esteem, I ate nonstop (munchies anyone?) and just generally felt really bad about myself. The consensus seems to be that it’s not addictive but I personally found myself craving it and getting incredibly irritable if I was unable to get some. I haven’t had weed in nearly 3 years now and I will NEVER even have one puff EVER again. I did so well stopping and am so proud of myself.
Posted by NoRegrets "on" 02/14 "at"01:09 PM
Weed can become addictive but that is if you are using it everyday but also it is really easy to get off weed. It depends on how stoned you are, body stoned is not fun, I’ve never been body stoned but from the people I know who have it’s the worst. I agree if you use weed casually and in moderation you will be fine.
Posted by Danya "on" 02/13 "at"06:26 PM
I honestly don’t see how people think its so bad, its not addictive, it doesn’t ruin your life, and if used in moderation has no long term side affects. There have been so many good things proven about it and the only long term affect is the smoke affecting your lungs. I’m not saying everyone or anyone should smoke it, I’m just saying that everyone has a choice whether they want to or not and neither group should be judged at all.

Well i believe you have a choice in life on everything you do,,you are only accountable for yourself..I myself do smoke Marijuana & in the past i have abused my body on it & other things, now i am 33yrs i use it to wind down from a hard day at work, also its good for pain relief as i have gallstones at present. using it for recreation i find its up to the individual concerned. I do not however think it is a source of hidding your problems what so ever or its going to resolve your personal issues you may have at the time..  But i love it & its my choice i have chosen.

I actually think that it’s used for the worst. I use to take it and it actually made things a lot worse for me and now I see it warping my bestfriend’s personality. But in saying that, it does sometimes help people in their different ways so I don’t actually know what side I take smile I’m bang on in the middle although I wouldn’t want to take it again myself, but I do occasionally slip up.

weed is wrong for society :( quit now
Posted by 3musketeers "on" 02/11 "at"05:01 PM
I agree that it is your own choice wether you smoke marijuana or not, but people should still be made aware of the true consequences of this. I find that here in NZ we have a much bigger problem of people smoking marijuana then tabacco, and still you see millions of campaigns against tabacoo when really marijuana is way more harmful and common among the young population. Yes making something illegal is not going to stop the problem, it can in fact actually make it worse, so i disagree that such things should be illegal, i mean in that case you should make anything thats unhealthy illegal ( which would be stupid) . But my point is it is your own choice what you decide to do with your body but to be able to make a sensible desicion people should be taught the true danger of marijuana and other very harmful drugs.

Dope has changed from 20 yrs ago when we tried it,these days it is more potent but also has had chemicals added to it by some distributors. It is less harmful when taken less frequently but i know so many that make it part of their unwinding of the days work….and their personalities definately become altered & paranoid etc dope & driving is suc a massive danger…not just drink driving…. thank goodness they changed the law for dope driving testing. At the end of the day thoguh,it is individual choice.
Posted by Becky44 "on" 02/11 "at"04:47 PM
I think it’s a persons choice on what they choose to experience or not. By telling them they are not allowed to do it does not always work as they will think they are missing out on something and want to try it even more. Everything has risks, maybe you should let them try it once so they know they are not really missing out on anything…
Posted by BekaAshley "on" 02/11 "at"04:33 PM
Dope is, I feel, incredibly stupid. I’ve seen what it can do to some people I love, and that’s why I hate the stuff. It’s incredibly addictive and screws your brain. I have no time for it.
As for alcohol, it has a bunch of different effects. It’s less the actual alcohol that is fattening than what it is that is mixed with it (sugar, cream etc.
ALL of these things (yes, from caffiene to cocaine) are bad for you, hallucinogenics particularly. When you’ve seen what I’ve seen (like a loved one have a psychological break down) you’d be pretty against it too.
Posted by EmeraldMaz "on" 02/11 "at"03:57 PM
Perhaps a less biased source of information would be better (more accurate & balanced) for an article like this. How about some articles on how bad alcohol *actually* is? Or even how FaT it makes you? Campaigns on drinking seem to be aimed mostly at men, yet after the sevens guess who all the drunk injured people at the hospital were? Women.
