Girl’s guide to going flatting
There’s more to leaving home than shipping out your bed and undies - here are a few things to think about before kissing mum and dad goodbye!
Location: think about how far you’re prepared to live from work and/or uni. A flat close to town might cost more in rent, but if you live too far out you’ll end up spending the money you save on travel costs!
Tip: Research bus routes and fares before moving in, or drive your route to school or work at the time you’d usually do it to see how much time and petrol it’ll take.
Cost: as well as rent you’ll also need to consider costs like paying bond (a few week’s rent up front) and bills. The more flatties the less you’ll have to pay in actual rent, but things like phone and power bills will increase too - especially over winter when you have to crank up the heat!
Don’t be duped! It might be cheap and in the perfect spot, but if it leaks, smells and has a mouse in the pantry, you might want to keep looking…
Flatmates: who you live with is as important as where you live, and how much you pay! It might be easier to move into an existing flat if it’s your first time flatting so you don’t have to worry about things like setting up a lease and dealing with landlords first time round.
Tips to make flatting easier:
1. Set up an AP to pay your rent.
2. Use a flat account to pay for things like washing powder and toilet paper.
3. Be ready to compromise on things like shower time, noise levels and TV shows!

Ended up moving in with my BF and its great…until, we decided to let a friend of mine live with us, and now everything is strained. I don’t see my BF that much and my so-called friend isn’t pulling her weight around the house. Also she expects to eat our food even though she opted out of helping paying for food in the idea that she will buy her own….its getting annoying… Wish we had never invited her…... My sister and her flat account  Really good idea. They also had a food jar in which they put $30 each in every week for food. Another awesome idea they had was a chores roster, so they all helped equally, since there was 4 people they had a person on a chore i.e dishes and a person who helped. I found it really helpful when i found a flat i thought i would like to arrange a time to go over when all the flatmates were home so i could have a cuppa with them and get an idea of the personalities i would be living with.
