How to start a blog
Want to start a blog, but don’t know where to start? Here are my top tips to help you get started!
1. Choose your focus, e.g:
*fashion
*food
*music
*design
*subterranean gardening (!)
Or any other topic you’re interested in.
2. Choose your style
*written
*visual (photo/video)
*audio etc.
Think about what medium best suits your topic - i.e. if you’re writing about fashion like Maya, having heaps of text and small photos probably isn’t the best idea. Her street style blog Turned Out hits the mark with its focus on one image, accompanied by a little text.
3. Choose your site
*Wordpress
*Posterous (Our very own Richard Kavanagh has a Posterous blog, Hair There and Everywhere)
*Tumblr
*Blogger
These are currently some of the most popular (free) blog sites, but there are heaps more out there. I’d suggest doing a bit of a web jaunt to find a site you like.
4. Choose your blog template.
Different templates suit different kinds of blogs - i.e. a photo blog will require a template where the images are able to be the focus, not a template in which text boxes fill the whole page! Also, consider how you’d like the blog to function once it’s up and running - i.e. do you want it to have lots of pages, like a website, or do you just want a really simple blog where your posts are listed on a homepage?
Did you know? If you own a domain name (like 247girl.co.nz!) you can ‘map’ it to your blog, so when people type in that address it goes straight to your blog. Search ‘domain mapping’ on whatever blog site you end up using for more.
