How to stick to a New Year’s resolution
Goals….easy to set, hard to achieve! That’s pretty well the answer we got when we asked around. However, we also found that three of the girls we admire and who achieve the most, also know how to set and achieve goals. They shared a few of their secrets with us.
Here’s what they had to say:
“It’s easy to set goals, but really tough to follow through. If I haven’t got goals though, it’s like driving somewhere without a destination or a map”. Even if
I’m lost or off track, sometimes I don’t even know it!” Robyn
“I think of a major goal as being like sitting down to eat a huge cake by myself. I could never do it in one go, but if I break it down into little portions, over time I can manage it.” Sally
“The worst thing you can do is to be put off by failure. If you slip up or get behind, don’t give up. Work even harder to make up for it!” Cara
3 secrets to reaching your goals
1. What is my goal?
Be specific here. Describes what you want to accomplish with as much detail as possible. Specifically state what you want to achieve: eg: Get all merits and excellences in my internal assessments this year. Be able to run 5 kms without stopping by this date. Keep my room tidy so I can find things.
You gotta really want it! Make sure the goal you are working for is something you really want, not just something that sounds good.
MAKE SURE YOU CAN MEASURE YOUR ACHIEVEMENT!
2. When do I want to achieve it by?
Again, be specific here. Write down when you want to achieve what. Some really big goals can seem daunting and will take time. To keep yourself focused and motivated, break big goals down into a series of milestones. Reward yourself for each achievement level. For example if you’re currently unfit and your goal is to be able to run a 10 km race, then break it down into mini-goals. Eg: be able to run 2 kms by the end of this month, 4 kms by the end of Feb, 7 kms by end of March and 10 kms by end of April.
Each week, measure your achievement and keep a diary of how far you can run.
BREAK GOALS DOWN INTO MINI-GOALS.
3. How will I get there?
Reaching your goals won’t just happen. You’ll need to make changes to your life, habits or behaviour and constantly remind yourself to work towards what it is you want. Take time to think about and write down how you’ll achieve what you want. For example, I’ll get up half an hour earlier on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and go for a run before school and I’ll keep a diary of when and how far I ran.
Sounds a bit lame, but make a star chart for yourself or give yourself a little reward each week you achieve what you set out to do.
Most importantly, write your goals down in detail and keep them somewhere you can see them every day. This not only makes them a reality for you, it also creates a set of instructions for our subconscious mind to carry out.
WRITE IT DOWN!
How to write your goals
Be positive. Write what you DO want, not what you DON’T (and send this message to your subconscious mind). Your subconscious mind can not doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong, it just carries out our instructions. The more positive instructions you give it, the more positive results you will get. Thinking positively in every day life will also help in your growth as a human being. Don’t limit it to goal setting.
Short and sweet and easy to review. Writing down your goals creates the roadmap to your success. Although just the act of writing them down can set the process in motion, it is also extremely important to review your goals frequently. Remember, the more focused you are on your goals the more likely you are to accomplish them. Keep them by your bed or next to your mirror so you see them every day.
Failure is part of the process. Don’t give up. Every time you make a decision during the day, ask yourself this question, “Does it take me closer to, or further from my goal.” If the answer is “closer to,” then you’ve made the right decision. If the answer is “further from,” well, you know what to do.
If you follow this process everyday you will be on your way to achieving success in every aspect of your life.

Definately write it down! If you can see it, you can achieve it! What’s that saying, ‘Slowly, Slowly catch a monkey’. Good things take time. I’m on a diet and exercise regime at the moment and have lost 13 kilos in 4 months. I’ve fallen off the wagon, but got back on. The key is good support. And if you see someone trying, encourage them. They are more likely to succeed with everyones positive encouragement. Posted by Tina29 "on" 02/12 "at"09:31 AM |
