Planning your OE

Planning your OE

Doing an OE (Overseas Experience) is a rite of passage for many of us Kiwis - there’s something in our blood that makes us want to get out and explore the world! While winging it can be a lot of fun, a little planning could turn your OE into the adventure of a lifetime. Below are some things to think about when you’re planning your trip.

Why you’re going.

There are a number of reasons people travel - what’s yours? Deciding what you want your trip to be about can be a helpful starting point when it comes to planning - especially if there isn’t just one place you could see yourself going to! Some of the reasons people do an OE are:

*to travel

*to live and work in another country

*to study

*to volunteer with a charity

Once you’ve worked out what you want the main purpose of your trip to be - and how long you want to be away - you’ll be able to get to work making it happen!

Where you’re going.

For some people, where they go on their OE doesn’t really matter - for others it’s the whole reason they’re going. If there’s a specific place you want to travel around, or live in, commit to it and then start looking into what you need to do to make it happen visa wise. Talking to people who have done similar trips can be really helpful, especially if they went to the country/ies you’re planning on visiting.

How much $$ you’ll need to keep you going!

This will depend, of course, on where you’re going, how long you’re going for and the purpose of the trip. For example, if you’re going to be travelling for three months straight you’ll need to put more money aside than if you’re planning on moving somewhere and working as soon as you arrive. Even then, if you don’t have a job lined up before you go it pays to have a buffer in case it takes longer for you to find work than you thought!

Tip: ask your bank about overdraft/credit card options in case of emergencies (note: buying designer shoes doesn’t (always) qualify as an emergency!)

EEK I can’t wait for my OE!!!  I just spent months in Europe and cannot wait to go back.  I think youdefinitely need to put a lot of thought into your OE as there are lots of things that can go wrong…And watch out for pickpockets!!  REALLY REALLY watch out for them, especially in Paris and San Francisco.  hey are sneaky, I know that from personal experience :/
