Take great photos this summer!
Summer’s a time of fun, holidays - and lots of photos! Whether it’s Christmas with the family, that New Year’s roadtrip or just general good times in the sun, these tips will help you take great shots to remember it all by!
Tips for taking better photos:
1. Know your camera. Reading the manual (most are online if you’ve lost your hardcopy) is a good idea - it’ll explain all those confusing symbols on your camera, which you might find has a whole lot of useful settings you had no idea about!
2. Frame your shot. Decide what you want to be the focus of the shot and go from there. Don’t be afraid to try different angles - or to get nice and close! Zooming in on your subject, or physically moving closer to it can make for some brilliant shots.
3. Avoid using a flash. Using natural light/other available light (candles, room lights etc.), as much as possible will give you a much better photo. If you’re able to adjust your camera’s ISO setting, bump it up in low light situations (800-1600 depending on how much light there is), and only use the flash if you have to.
4. If you’re taking a photo without a flash in low lighting, keep the camera very steady. Using a tripod, or setting it on a solid surface is a good idea. And don’t forget to bump up the ISO (800-1600 depending on how much light there is).
5. Avoid taking photos of people with bright lights - e.g. sun - directly behind them. This will leave their face in shadow. Adjust your angle, or try using fill flash to light their face.
6. Take lots of photos! That way you’ll have more chance of getting the money shot you’re after. It’ll also give you a chance to try different techniques and settings and see what works and what doesn’t.
7. Going on holiday? Take extra memory cards so you don’t have to worry about your camera filling up or having to offload them to a computer while you’re away - and don’t forget to pack your charger and/or extra battery!
