What you need to know about body piercing

What you need to know about body piercing

As with tattoos, body piercings are a way of expressing yourself - in either a subtle or extreme way. Either way, it pays to get them done safe and done right!

Side effects:
When it comes to piercings, the most common side effect is infection, which can also lead to scarring. To make sure your piercing heals well (and quickly), it’s important to follow the aftercare advice the person who does your piercing gives you. Some people also react to cheap metals, so if your piercing is flaring up - seemingly for no good reason - try changing out the stud for a real silver/gold stud or sleeper. Your body might just be a little fussy about the kind of jewellery it will and won’t wear!

Convincing the ‘rents
Just like shaving your legs for the first time, that first piercing can be a major deal for some parents. One way you can help them get their heads around the fact their sweet daughter wants to jab holes in her body is to find a reputable, sterile place to get it done - and maybe avoid extreme piercing the first time ‘round if they’re super sceptical!

Go pro
As a general rule, get your piercing done somewhere that’s clean and has a good reputation - it might cost a little more, but if it saves you from dealing with an infected piercing or botched job it’ll be worth it! Getting your ears pierced is pretty straightforward, but if you want to, say, stretch your lobe or put a bar through your neck skin you need to know the person doing the work knows what they’re doing! Ask around for recommendations on where to go, and where to avoid.

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly - beware of dirty needles/equipment! Don’t be afraid to ask if the piercer is using a new needle, or say something if they aren’t wearing clean gloves. No need to risk Hepatitis and HIV for a piercing!

I have had a lot of piercings, spider bites, septum, hip surface bars, 3x dermals navel and countless ear piercings stretching etc, my advise is that you should always look up what you are going to get done to make sure they are using the right jewellery for the piercing, and what the rejection rates are, how long the healing process is etc. Always get pierced by a professional at a studio with a good name, its worth the money! Make sure that they use single use needles and have an autoclave and that you never get pierced with a piercing gun as it is unsanitary and cannot be cleaned properly also it is punching a blunt hole through your skin rather than piercing. NEVER get a pal to pierce you it is far to dangerous!

Just got my navel pierced the other day(: it looks great, and it’s pretty easy to look after.

i agree,i always go to Trendz! you may have to dig deep in your wallet but at the end of the day if you want a piercing you may as well get it done properly and hygenic. afterall the cost for a safe piercing would be the same price as you would be paying for cream at the chemist to heal the infection! smile

Another tip, be very fussy oabouy the type of jewellery you are about to be pierced with.  Make sure it is good quality, especially for the first time.

My friend pierced my upper ear and it was fine, didn’t get infected but my mum told me to take it out. But i’d say definatly go pro unless you want an infection or scarring.

When I was 18 I had my tongue pierced, my nipple pierced and 12 earrings in one ear and 6 in the other. I never had any problems with infection or irritation. I went to the same lady everytime, because I trusted her, and heaps of my friends had gone to her before hand. When it comes to your body, I say you should always go with the best! Word of mouth from people you trust is your best source of information. Nowadays I have 2 earrings! Oh how age has changed me!

I had my navel peirced for 9 months (I cant believe mum let me get it done) but every so often it would get infected and I just had to take it out because the infection wouldnt go away otherwise. I’m really disappointed because its started to close up but I dont think I’ll get it again, its quite expensive to get it done professionally ($75!)

i just got my nose pierced for the first time about three months ago and one of the main things i was told to avoid for a while with any face piercing is make up because your skin is still healing its easy for your piercing to get infected as we all know. so avoid make up as hard as it may be. my friend failed to do so and had to take her piercing out. it was a waste of sixty dollars !!!!!

i’m never good with peircings i’ve had my nose peirced my lip peirced twice , my tounge peirced and my upper ear peirced twice, my septum peirced and they all just end up closing up or getting infected but i just totally love them should i stop wasting my money on them hahaha ?

I have my nose and navel pierced. I got them both done at the same place, about 6 months apart. The lady that did it was really lovely and told me how to look after the piercings before she did it and got me to sit down and eat a lolly after to make sure I was ok smile
My advice is to make sure you ask around your mates for the best place

I was actually pleasantly surprised when I got my tongue pierced at the gypsy fair. They were wearing gloves that I seen the guy take out of a new packet, same as the needle and he advised me to always make sure any equipment was sterile or better, new! I was also given protat spray to help clean the piercing for aftercare. Despite everything being done properly I couldn’t eat anything for three days due to swelling and pain so consider these things seriously.

I have successfully pierced 4 lips including my own and i agree when you dont take care of them, it leads to infection. ALWAYS ASK A PARENT>

Loads of people go out and do it themselves because they haven’t been warmed. This is a great article showing why you need to “go pro” instead of going solo.
