Youthtown Break from the Quake

Gabrielle at Break from the Quake

This July Youthtown held a free ‘Break from the Quake’ camp in Auckland for 250 young Cantabrians aged 10-17. The idea behind the week-long camp was to literally give these guys a ‘break from the quake,’ and it was a massive success! Gabrielle Jarden (15) from Aranui High School went along and had a great time. Read her story below!

What was the biggest highlight of camp?
The whole camp was amazing - I got to try loads of new things. I really loved the Fear Fall at Rainbow’s End - it was the coolest ride, the view from the top was really awesome and the drop down was a huge adrenalin rush!

Did you overcome any challenges while you were on camp?
I guess the main challenge for me was going on a camp where I didn’t know anyone.

How long have you lived in Christchurch for and what suburb do you live in?
I have lived in Christchurch my whole life. The suburb I live in is Parklands - which is close to the beach. It’s my home and a part of me. It was so sad to see it destroyed.

What advice would you give someone attending the second week of Break from the Quake?
I suggest you give everything a go because the opportunity might not come along again.

Where were you when the February 22 earthquake struck and what was your experience of it?
My friends and I were on a bus going to Christchurch Boys’ High School to get tickets to a dance. We were almost at the school when the back of the bus dropped and then it started rocking from side to side, forward and back. It almost tipped over. After the bus stopped rocking the bus driver pulled over and checked we were all ok. When we got to Christchurch Boys’ High I walked to Northlands Mall with a friend. We had no cellphone and I couldn’t contact anyone. The earthquake struck at 12.52pm but I didn’t get home until 6pm that night.

Did you learn something new about yourself while you were on camp?
I didn’t really learn anything new about myself while I was on camp but I came back with loads of happy memories and stories to tell my friends.

Did you make some new friends and will you keep in touch with them?
I was quite nervous to go on camp because I didn’t really know anyone but I made loads of new friends who I now get to hang out with because they go to the same school.

Had you been to Auckland before? What did you think of it?
Before the trip I’d always dreamed of visiting Auckland. It is definitely one of the prettiest cities at night. Thank you Youthtown for the awesome trip!!
