My boyfriend hates my friends

q:I’ve been seeing this guy for about a year now and he’s really possessive. He hates hanging out with my group of friends so I’m always hanging with him and his mates. I know I should make more of an effort to spend time with my girlfriends as I’m drifting away from them. When I do hang out with them though I find myself wanting to be with my boyfriend.

a:You definitely, DEFINITELY, need to make an effort to hang out with your friends more. Your boyfriend might seem like your whole life right now, but if it ends badly its your girlfriends who you’ll be turning to when you’re feeling down. Alienating them now will only mean you’re going to feel alienated later on down the track. I know plenty of people who have done exactly what you’ve done and have severely regretted it later on. You need to remember that boyfriends come and go but your friends will be around for years to come!

Let him know it upsets you
Ask your boyfriend what he has against hanging out with your friends. Don’t be aggressive about it, but let him know that it really upsets you and makes you feel like you can’t hang out with them either. It’s actually pretty selfish of him to not make the effort to get to know your friends, so don’t let him make you feel like you’re asking too much from him – because you’re really not. It’s not fair on you to have to make all the sacrifices in the relationship, it’s time for him to step up and make some compromises too. Sarah xx

I think that if he really liked and had trust in you he would let you have space and time for you friends. Friends last a lifetime.
